WHAT DO CONDITIONALS IN ENGLISH
GRAMMAR MEAN?
• Sometimes we call them 'if clauses'.

• They describe the result of something that


might happen (in the present or future) or
might have happened but didn't (in the past)

• They use different English verb tenses.


WORDS TO USE IN
CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

It is used to talk
about general truths
and habits .
Example:
1. What happens if you freeze water?
If I freeze water, it becomes a solid.
2. What happens if we catch the new
coronavirus?
If we catch the new coronavirus we get a range
of symptoms.

3. What happens if you don´t eat well?


If we don´t eat well, we get sick.

4. What happens if we get sick?


if we get sick, we go to hospital

What happens if = Qué pasa si…?


How do we elicit zero conditional?
If clause + Main clause

Present simple + Present simple

If you freeze water,


Present simple

it becomes a solid .
If you mix red and blue,
you get purple.
FIRST CONDITIONAL
It is used to talk about
things which are
possible in the present
or the future.
Example:
1. What will happen if you don´t study hard?
If I don´t study hard, I won´t pass my exams.
If I don´t pass my exams, I will be sad.

2. If we don´t care our planet, it will get sick.

If our planet gets sick, it will die.


Examples with "if“, "unless" + simple present

1. You will be sick if you don't stop eating.


You will be sick unless you stop eating.

2. I won't pay if you don't provide the goods


immediately.
I won't pay unless you provide the goods immediately.
3. If you don't study dilligently, you'll never
understand trigonometry.

Unless you study dilligently, you'll never understand


trigonometry.
How do we elicit first conditional?
If clause + Main clause

Present simple + WILL + Infinitive


(without to)

If we don´t take care of the Earth,


it will die.
SECOND CONDITIONAL
It is used to talk about
things which are unreal
in the present or the
future.
I would go to the

.
EXAMPLES:

1. If the government spent more money on


education, poverty would reduce.

2. If car technology developed as fast as computers,


a trip across the Atlantic would last a few seconds.

3. If fiber optics were cheaper, copper cables would


be a thing of the past.
