INTRODUCTION
Ranipet was established during the year 1737.The industrial complex is the main
core of the Ranipet which is established in the year 1970. The industrial complex
has Phase-I and Phase-II where Petro- chemical, Bulk drugs & Pharmaceuticals,
Heavy Engineering, Foundry, Chemicals, Tanneries and miscellaneous industries
are located.
According to the 2009 survey of ‘Blacksmith institute’ New York, Ranipet is
one most polluted city in the world. It stated that A factory in Ranipet
manufactured sodium chromate, chromium salts and basic chromium sulfate
tanning powder that is used locally in the leather tanning process.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TN PCB) estimates that about 1,500,000
tons of solid wastes accumulated over three decades of plant operation. These lie
without check in an open yard (three to five meters high and on nearly five and a
half acres of land) on the facility premises and easily leach into the groundwater.

Where is affect the nearby cultivating field. In results to this many

farmers in the nearby village lost their fertile lands

AIM
The aim of the project is to remove the hexavalent chromium(Cr+6) sludge
from the premises of the “ Tamil Nadu Chromate and Chemical Limited at an
Industrial estate in Ranipet and reclamation of the land for the agriculture
purpose

OBJECTVE
• Removal of chromium sludge from the Premises
• Reclamation of the land
• Prevent the mixture of heavy metals in the ground water
• Retain the farming using technology
• Improve the environment to live and work
• Improve the quality of ground water

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

To remove the sludge, from the premises which have been laying there for
past 2 decades
It improves the quality of ground water level, and surrounding environment
It compensate the brown fields and farmers who lose their fertile land because
this contamination
It will sustain the food need of the ranipet
By creating a better job opportunity in reclamation land will helps them to
develop their slife style along with their culture.

SITE LOCATION – RANIPET

Area statement

Site Area: 32 acres

PROBLEMS AND ISSUES

1. Health issue such as cancer, skin and eye irritation and infertility caused
by the contamination of groundwater and soil in the surrounding area
2. During rainy season the sludge mix with rain water and reach the ground
water and nearby lake
3. Soil contamination
4. Ground water contamination
5. Decreased in the agriculture yield and many lands became brown fields
6. Near by lakes and river are polluted

REQUIREMENTS
• Better surrounding environment
• Reclamation of the premises
• Treatment of groundwater
• Improving the cultivation
• At least to attain the agricultural needs
• Cold storage with market space
• Minimum area with high yield

Material and methods

Removal of cr+6 from the site is a huge task. Many method were adopted to
resolve this issue, some of the important method are

• In situ Geo chemical fixation method

• Biosorption
• Soil Flushing/Chromium Extraction
