Philosophy of Education

Becoming a teacher was always something I wanted to do but didn’t know if I should

pursue. I knew I wanted to do something with music, but I could not figure out what. Being in

the top groups in my school had me pursuing a career in being a musician, however, during my

last years of high school my music teachers really lead me to the path of becoming an educator.

My teachers often showed us their dedication for teaching me and their student music, they did

fundraiser, took us on trips, and taught us everyday skills. This way of educating the student

helped me realized that a great teacher is patience, adaptable, is knowledgeable about their

subject. These are all skills I have learn to use while working as an SPTA, and these skills have

helped me out a lot with helping students and learning from the teacher I work with. The Field

Observation has helped me learn new perspectives and new skills to better teach students, skills

like learning how to help students with different languages or cultures feel welcome and proud of

their language is one of the best skills I’ve learned.

The educational philosophy and psychological orientations that mostly fit my beliefs on

education are Essentialism and Behaviorism. Essentialism closely fits my philosophy because I

believe students need to understand and learn basic information for them to succeed in the real

world. I place essentialism into my teaching by breaking down the lesson plans so that every

students can understand the material before moving into harder parts of the lesson. Behaviorism

fits my psychological orientation because it in my opinion, students will do whatever they want

when they don’t understand the material or don’t want to do anything. Students should be

worked on into small groups to better gauge the student’s level and capabilities, doing this will

ensure the student from disturbing other while improving themselves. Working with many

teachers and with resources students has provided me with experience and ideas that ended up

leading me to essentialism and behaviorism.

When teaching students new material, they must have prior knowledge in order to effectively

learn the new material. An instructional strategy that I would use is microlearning. Microlearning

is breaking down material into smaller and easier to understand parts. Allowing students to

manage themselves can make microlearning work its best. While students are working on

practice assessments, I can gauge and see where students are struggling and group students into

diverse learning levels. This way students can learn to socialize and work with others instead of

having to ask the teacher.

Having a positive attitude, patience, and the ability to break subjects down to

understandable points are important skills and characteristics to have in order to succeed in this

career. While they seem like skills everyone should have, they are difficult to apply to different

situations and harder to learn new ways of adapting. I am currently working as a SPTA in the

SPED department, and I have been learning so much about different students. I started as a

resources assistant and moved to the SPED, and this changed my way of teaching and learning.

Learning to work with different types of students helps me understand students with disabilities

and students with home problems. Continuing to work under teachers and taking the necessary

class are key to achieving my goal of becoming a certified teacher and obtaining my teacher’s

licenses.
