The Use of

Technology in
the Classroom
and in Schools

By Zachary Wilson
Over the years, technology has been slowly
integrated into many school system's academic
plans.

Introduction,
Some may argue that technology could lead to a loss
Background, of human connection or just be an overall distraction,
like in "The Pros and Cons of Technology in
and the Classroom" by IndiaEducation.net
Prevalence
Technology is considered a critical issue in schools
by many because of its never-ending future and
limitless possibilities.
Introduction, Background, and
Prevalence, Continued

• In schools, technology affects everyone. In

today's educational setting, both
administrators, teachers, and students are all
similarly affected by technology.
• Technology is finding it's way to challenge
colleges as prices rise. In "The Rise of
Educational Technology as a Sociocultural
and Ideological
Phenomenon", George Veletsianos and Rolin
Moe explain that students are getting upset
with rising college costs, which could open
the door to less expensive and more
convenient online learning.
Causes, Signs, and
Symptoms of
Technology

• The rise in educational

technology was caused by the
opportunities that it presents
• Signs that this could be an issue
is spending excessive amounts
of time looking at a screen, and
breaks are always
recommended after about 30-45
minutes of screen-time
Causes, • Technology is nowadays seen as an everyday
occurrence in today's classrooms
Signs, and • In the classroom, technology can be seen in the

Symptoms of form of Smart-Boards, iPad's,

Chromebooks, and other computer/tablet

Technology, devices
• Some teachers and students prefer to use these
Continued technological advances because of its simplicity,
opposed to the classic paper and pencil
Pros and Cons
• Pros - Simplistic aspect of turning in and grading
work, which is much easier electronically than
paper and pencil. Janelle Cox also explains that
"Today’s technology enables students to learn at
their own pace. For example, almost all apps
allow for individualized instruction." (Cox 6) In
"Benefits of Technology in the Classroom".

• Cons – Technological issues, such as

malfunctions, Wi-Fi-problems, and as the textbook
states, "The questionable learning outcomes that
result from technology don't justify its
considerable cost, and this huge amount of
money could be better used to reduce class sizes
or provide professional development activities for
teachers." (Gabriel & Richtel, 2011) (Kauchak
and Eggen Page 382).
The Current Struggle to Keep Up

• According to Martin Armstrong in

"Education Struggling to Keep up
with Digital Advances", only 39%
of US citizens feel as though their
education has given them the
technological knowledge they
need for their lifetime.
• Only China had a higher
percentage at 68%, but for
technology in the classroom to
fully overtake paper and
pencil, the number in America
needs to change.

Where Can Teachers
Go To Get Information?

• There are plenty of useful articles

and websites teachers can use to
get information about technology
• In particular, "Professional
Development Technology for
Teachers and Administrators" by
the GoGuardian Team, brings up
great points such as improved
Podcasts, Teacher Training
Videos, and so much more to help
aid teachers with technology
What Does Faculty
Training Cost and Who
Would Be Involved?

• Some school systems train

their staff/faculty by themselves,
which would save money
• Other districts have real
meetings or conferences where
an expert is brought in to
introduce and educate teachers
and staff on how to use their
technology
Research Study – What
Population Was Used?

• "Children and Technology" - Salem Press, Inc.

(No direct author given)
• Focused on young children preschool and up
• Based their findings from students in American
classrooms
Research Study – Their Hypothesis and
Findings

• Main idea of the article: Some scientists

recommend not to expose any children
under the age of two to technology, while
others say there could be advantages to
these children
• They gave both sides of the reason at the
end, ultimately leaving it up to
personal opinion and choice
• These findings show that technology is
becoming a mainstay in younger
classrooms very fast, but the board of
education/staff need to figure out if this
technology usage should be limited
