Answer the following Case Study questions:

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of allowing employees to use their personal
smartphones for work?
Employees using smartphones enables companies to have the benefits of a mobile
workforce without purchasing these devices. This is especially advantageous to smaller
businesses with limited funding. However, managing personal phones is more difficult than
company-supplied phones since costs for managing the former may increase and protecting the
confidential information of the company may be a challenge. Furthermore, the IT Department
has no grasp of the applications the employees’ phones have which can pose security risks.

2. What people, organization, and technology factors should be addressed when deciding
whether to allow employees to use their personal smartphones for work?
First, the company should take into account the compatibility of the personal devices by
making a list of approved devices along with the requirements to have an efficient way of
screening. This addresses the risk issue that these devices have. Second, there is also the
factor of the willingness of the employees to adopt the BYOD system. There must be contracts
or any kind of agreement between the company and the employees. Third factor is the capacity
of the IT Department to adopt the BYOD. If they are unprepared or incapable of managing
personal devices, this means that they are not yet ready.

3. Compare the BYOD experiences of IBM and Intel. Why did BYOD at Intel work so well?
In IBM, the IT Department has a problem with the applications in the employees’ devices
that are not under their control. They also configured the personal devices which severely
limited what the employees can do with their own devices like disabling Apple’s iCloud and Siri.
In Intel, the BYOD worked well because first, they created an end-user service level agreement
that emphasized the willingness of the employees to partake in the BYOD. Second, instead of
disabling some important functions in the employees’ phones, they found a way to make it work
by allowing only devices that passed the requirements to access the network. This way, the
people can use their own apps alongside the Intel app

4. Allowing employees to use their own smartphones for work will save the company money. Do
you agree? Why or why not?
Initially, BYOD can help save company money concerning the startup cost but over time,
the price of managing the phones may increase given that it is harder to maintain the BYOD
than using the company’s own tech.
