MM101 – Limits and fits (Dimensional Tolerancing) work sheet (Tutorial-45 &
Assignment-1)
1. The pulley assembly shown below has various fits designated. Determine the class of fit, Hole
limits, Shaft limits, Maximum and Minimum clearances – for each of the dimensioned features.
Insert your answers in the table provided.

Tutorial discussion points –

what is the function of:
a. the housing?
b. the bush?
c. the shaft?

Accurately sketch (use isometric sketches) each of the four named components that are shown in
the drawing of figure 1 (pulley, shaft, bush, housing). Add the four feature dimensions that you
have evaluated in the table above to the relevant sketches. Place them accurately in your sketches in
the form of limiting sizes. Do not worry about the other dimensions in the sketches.

When the bush is assembled into the housing what do you think will happen to the internal diameter
of the bush and why?

2. For figure 1 above, if the internal bore of the bush is finish machined to final size after being
pressed into the housing, determine:

 The maximum radial float of the pulley shaft in the hole (bush) ………………..

 The minimum radial float of the pulley shaft in the hole (bush) ………………..
