Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Region

Group 2
Pelagio: Hello everyone! We are the students from 12 GAS Tourism 2 under Group 2 and we will
show you five sculptures and architectures inside the Far Eastern University – Manila. Let’s start!
Gazmin: For our first stop, we have the Statue of Dr. Nicanor Reyes. He was the founder of Far
Eastern University. The statue was made back in 2009 by Peter De Guzman and has the height of
121 inches and is mounted at the back of FEU Grand Stand and Nicanor Reyes Hall. Peter De
Guzman created a statue that exhibits the qualities of the founder which are its calming presence
and silent dignity.
Pelagio: Next stop, we have with us the Cubist Sculptures of the National Artist Vicente
Manansala called “The Bronze”. It is a series of 4 sculptures that portrays the advancements in
the arts and sciences which people can find inside the campus of FEU in Manila. The material that
was used on the piece is a bronze that was a purposeful choice because it is reframing properties
which gives bronze its greenish shade over time and green being one of the primary colors of
FEU. The sculptures were built in recognition of the university’s 40th anniversary in 1968.

Nalangan: Next stop, we have the Nicanor Reyes Hall. The Nicanor Reyes Hall, named after the
Far Eastern University's founder, is the oldest and most valuable structure on campus, as it is a
relic of the university's original Art Deco architectural design. National Artist Architect Pablo
Antonio designed and built the structure in 1939. The complex is now regarded as Manila's
largest body of work in the Art Deco style.

Mag-ugat: Second to the last stop, we have the chapel inside FEU called Our Lady of Fatima which
was designed by Felipe Mendoza in 1955 and it was later on opened in 1957. You can also see
the Our Lady of Fatima tile mosaic by Vicente Manansala in glossy blue hues for the façade of the
chapel. You can also see a crucifix and mural made by Botong Francisco and the La
Pieta by Napoleon Abueva which was donated in the university in the year 1999. The chapel can
only accommodate between 300 to 350 people at any given time which is small compared to the
number of students, faculties and employees of the university.

Factor: The altar area was elevated by 5 feet so that those standing outside can still see it
unobstructed from the Freedom Park. For our last stop, we have a series of 4 carved artworks
inside the administration building created by Francesco Monti that shows the history of
colonization over the past few years here in the Philippines. And that is it for our vlog, we hope
that you were able to learn new things through our vlog. See you tamaraws!
