Subject: U.S. History

Grade level: 11th grade

Unit: The Cold War’s effect on America and it’s influence.

Assignment 1 - Ideological differences

Have students compare and contrast the conflicting ideologies of communism and capitalism. They will
write their findings on a sheet of paper that will be graded by me.

Students will be assigned descriptions of characteristics, personal accounts, and images relating to either
the ideology of communism or capitalism and asked to match the content to the right ideology.

My goal is for students to be able to recognize immediately whether or not the subject they examine is
related to either communism or capitalism by developing skills to detect and identify characteristics that
display its relation.

There will be two categories the group has to assign to each of the texts, images, and or people. Using
what they learned from the day of viewing about the unit, they will be asked to assign whether the
subject in question aligns with the capitalist ideology or the communist ideology. Each group of four will
be assigned 20 subjects.

We will discuss each item on the two lists and explain why they belong on the side that they are on.

Afterwards the students will reflect on what they have discussed in the classroom and write a short one
paragraph essay as their exit ticket.

Assignment 2 – Conflicts of the Globe

Have students examine global hotspots of conflicts that were influenced behind the scenes by the U.S.
and he U.S.S.R. They will write their findings on a sheet of paper that will be graded by me.

Students will be assigned a specific part of the world and asked what are the reasons each sphere of
influence had for entering the proxy war. Who were the major players in this small conflict and who
were they backed by? What was the outcome of the conflict? What government was installed here?

My goal is for students to be able to immediately understand the context of the area of the world in
relation to the cold war. They should be able to examine a region and mentally map out the web of
global relations each country had.

I plan to have my students examine an area of the world using a map with the certain areas they will
have to research highlighted. The areas of the world will be Central America, Southeast Asia, and the
Middle East.

They will have a sheet of paper asking them to describe the areas during the cold war, this sheet will
contain broad questions of “who what when where and why” each followed an allotted amount of space
for the student to answer the question. The research will be done on a computer device with internet
connectivity. Using the world wide web, each student will research each area of the world and it’s
connection to the cold war.

Once complete, the student will submit their papers and we as a class will discuss each area of the world
and it’s relation to the cold war.

Assignment 3 – Change in Lifestyle

Have students analyze life before the beginning of the cold war and life decades into the conflict. I will
ask each student individual to tell me about their experience during the assignment and they will write
their findings on a sheet of paper that will be graded by me.

Students will be asked to role play as Americans in two periods, first one during the Great Depression
and next during the economic boom during the beginning of the Cold War.

My goal is for students to be able to identify the time in which an American individual lives by their
status in relation to the cold war.

Each student will start off this exercise split into two groups. One representing Americans during the
great depression, and the other representing Americans during the cold war. The exercise will consist of
each student having an income and deciding what to purchase each week. Each week will introduce a
new issue that will either hurt or improve the economy. Both sides will receive different weekly issues to
reflect the time period they are in. The great depression side of the class will find it very hard to keep
their money from being drained while the cold war side of the class will not have very much trouble at
all.

After 20 weeks (20 rounds) of budgetary management, the role play ends and each student will write a
two paragraph reflection on their experience trying to manage their budget.

The paragraph will be an exit ticket.

Assignment 4 – Test

I will end the week with a multiple choice quiz and a short response essay over the material recently
learned.

Students will be given a test about all the material they have interacted with the past four days.

The final day of the lesson week will be for a quiz that goes over everything the class went over the past
four days.

My goal is to test my students on the knowledge they have built up and worked on over the past four
days.

The test will be 20 questions and a short response essay.
