How to Properly Line Size a Hydraulic Circuit in Pipe

Line sizing is used to identify what type and how much pipe needs to be used in a hydraulic
circuit. It can be difficult to remember the math for all the steps, so it is good to have a set of
instructions. Once break the line it done into smaller pieces line sizing will not seem so difficult
and will become simple.

Tool and materials needed:

 Pencil
 Eraser
 Pipe sizing chart
 Extra paper
 Calculator
Tools and materials with instructions:
 Hydraulic circuit
 Line sizing chart

• Notice: Be sure that your calculator functions properly and has the functions needed to
compete line sizing. Needs square root.
Above is the hydraulic circuit in your packet.

1. Pull out the line sizing chart.

2. Being labeling each line based off where the line is.
3. A will be suction.
4. B will pressure.
5. C will be Blind end work line or BEWL for short.
6. D will be Rod end work line or REWL for short.
7. E and F will be return line.
8. Label lines with the right velocity.
9. Suction line will be 4.
10. Pressure and work lines with be 15.
11. Return lines will be 10.
12. Label the max psi based off the circuit.
13. Label the gpm off the circuit information
14. Multiply your Gpm by the ratio on the circuit for BEWL flow.
15. Determine the correct thermotical diameter you with first multiple gpm by .3208
16. Divide your answer by the velocity.
17. Once you have your answer divide it by .7845
18. Square root your answer to get theory area
19. Turn to your pipe sizing chart
20. If suction or return lines look to schedule 40
21. If pressure or work line look to schedule 80
22. Look at inside diameter (ID) on chart.
23. Write in actual diameter
24. Look at chart for then put in actual area
25. Times Gpm for that line by .3208 again.
26. Divide answer by actual area for actual velocity.

Now that you understand how to line size a circuit you will effectively be able to size any
circuit will ease. If you have any questions, contact your teacher, or go to this link for video
information. If missing anything that was provided in the packet, please contact (fake
