The role of a national association executive committee is to direct and control the national association.
The executive committee sets the strategic direction, manages the association’s business through the
general secretary and ensures that the organisation operates to the highest standards of good
governance.
The executive committee meets on a regular basis in order to make the key decisions necessary to keep
the national association on track. The executive committee receives reports from the management team,
approves policies, considers capital and revenue investment requests and monitors the national
association’s progress towards achieving the targets set out in its business and strategic plans.
The executive committee is accountable to the national association’s members and consequently
scrutinises all aspects of the organisation, both on and off the pitch. Executive committee members can
use meetings to quiz the general secretary if specific areas are not reaching the expected standards.
The president usually chairs executive committee meetings, unless someone else has been appointed as
chair.
Executive committee discussions are guided by the meeting agenda, which typically includes the
following:
• Welcome and introduction by the chair of the meeting
• Review of action points from last meeting (see The Organisation of World Football: Action points)
• Matters arising since last meeting
• Reports to the executive committee by specific members of the management team
• Matters for discussion
• Matters for approval
• Update on staff/specific individuals
• Any other business
• Date of next meeting
There are usually a series of standard items that are discussed at every meeting. For example, the general
secretary always delivers a written report and there should always be a financial report. Such reports are
personally presented to the committee by senior members of the management team. The executive
committee may also choose to invite other members of the management team to deliver reports from
time to time, especially the technical director and national team coaches.
