PART III: WRITING “In your country, are there any problems happening because of global warming?” Write a three-paragraph essay to describe those problems. Do you have any idea about global warming? Do you know that global warming affects Thailand in many ways? The big problems that everyone is facing is global warming. It could be very dangerous for all organisms and ecosystem. Global warming is happening when the earth is heating up. The main reason is there are many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It consists of many gases for example, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, nitrous oxide, and steam. Nowadays, there are many cars and factories in Thailand that released these gases. From the emission and statistic study, Thailand released 2 million pounds of carbon dioxide into air every second. For example, when we burn fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas, they give off carbon dioxide. It’s also cause air pollution and PM2.5 in big cities. Greenhouse gases are good for human if it in proper amount. They keep the world warmer at night and absorbs the harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays of the sun. Therefore, global warming causes the harmful negative effects to the organisms and immediate transformation to our country in many ways. There are many important and interesting effects of global warming. First of all, the sea level is continue rising because water flows down from glacier and ice caps. The surface temperature is rising very fast. It’s rising 0.07 degree Celsius every year. From the research, the heat that is increasing caused the ice caps at the north pole and south pole continue melting very fast, especially 60 percent of all. The heat also caused the ocean warms and expand in volume. Scientists have pointed out that sea levels have risen and fallen substantially over Earth's 4.6-billion-year history but this time they’re rising very fast and very much than another times. The sea level has rising 10 to 20 centimeters in the past hundred years, according to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In the present, we can see this phenomenon evidently in Thailand. There are many plains and lowlands in Thailand for example, Central, Eastern, Southern, and Southern North-East Thailand. The result is there are heavy flooding very often. When it is raining, the river and sea level rising very fast and overflow the banks. It destroys everything such as cars, homes, dams, buildings, cultivated areas, public properties, and people life. The second one is Thai agriculture. It depends on the weather. The weather patterns have changed every year. Some years, it has a little rain, so the lands are very drought. Some years, there has rain too much, so it floods the farmland. They have to solve their facing problems all time. It’s bad for agriculture because plants can’t grow fully and dies in a few days or give less productivity. Global warming causes the inclement weather and climate change everywhere. If the farmer can’t predict the weather correctly, they can’t plan what to do to prevent their plants from a bad weather or disaster in a next day. It brings damage to productivity and income of the farmer. The last effect is the diseases in people and animals. The dangerous and harmful epidemic can emerge or re-emerge in unpredictable regions and unpredictable time. The scientists have discovered viruses locked up in glacier. The study at Oxford University tells us that there are many types of never-before-seen viruses in ice caps. If the ice caps melting, viruses can re-emerge and spread around the world and become a pandemic. This also happen in tropical and wet countries that include Thailand. There are vector-borne, foodborne, and waterborne infectious diseases. Global warming affects geographical distribution and activity of the vectors. The mosquitos are the major vector that caused infection because it likes warm and wet weather. It usually lay their eggs in stagnant water. The diseases that can infect from animals to humans for example, Malaria, Encephalitis, and Dengue fever. From the research, food and waterborne cases are increased every year. The flies are major vector. The diseases that can spread by water and food for example, Acute Diarrhea, Food Poisoning, Dysentery, Cholera, and Typhoid. To summarize, global warming causes the negative effects and considerable direct changes in the future in Thailand in many ways. We should help each other to solve this huge problem. We can make small changes in our daily life to reduce carbon dioxide emission for example, using cloth bags instead of plastic bags, turning off the light and water when not in use, using public transport instead of private transport, using bicycle, walking stairs instead of using elevator, using 2-sides paper, using LED light bulbs, reduce eating frozen food, reducing the use of chemicals in agriculture, reduce the burning of forest and grass field, reducing the use of air conditioners, reducing meat consumption, using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels energy, planting many trees, looking for the appliances that have Energy Star label, separating garbage, and speaking up etc. Scientists, governments, and individuals must work together in correctly, efficiently, and corresponding ways. Lastly, I hope that everyone can be a small power that can overcome this serious treat. What are we waiting for? END
