Subject-Verb Agreement (Rules on Compound Subjects- “and”)

I. OBJECTIVES

III. PROCEDURE
A. Introduction Today, we will be having a new lesson about subject-verb agreement and
the rules on compound subject, case A.

B. Modeling The teacher presents the sentences.

Sentence A: Andrei and the little boy play.


“Andrei and the little boy” is the subject who is plural, thus the verb
“play” do not have -s.
Sentence B: The boys and the girls sing the new song.
“The boys and the girls” is the subject who is plural, thus the verb
“sing” does not have –s.
Sentence C: Kevin and the children watch the movie.
“Kevin and the children” is the subject who is plural, thus the verb
“watch” contains -s.
Sentence D: The students and Mrs. Tozer are in the Science Park.
“The students and Mrs. Tozer” is the subject who is plural, thus the
verb “are” should be used.

C. Generalization In a sentence, the verb must agree with the subject. Rules in subject-verb
agreement must be observed.

2. Rules on Compound Subjects


Case A. A compound subject joined by “and” is generally plural and
must have a plural verb.

Note: Remember that plural verbs take the base form of verb, thus these
verbs do not have –s or –es and/or takes “are” as the verb.

D. Guided Practice i. Analyze each sentence. Identify the verb. Underline the verb if it
agrees with the subject; encircle if the verb does not agree with the
subject and right the correct verb above the wrong verb.
1. Sylvia and her classmates laughs at Rachel.
2. The soldiers and the master look after Androcles.
3. George and Tamara wants to leave soon.
4. The organizers and the participants enjoys the view of Taal
Lake.
5. Johann and the twin are having lunch.

ii. Rearrange the following set of words to form a sentence with a


complete thought and essence. Box the subject and encircle the
verb.

iii. Read each sentence. Choose the appropriate verb that agrees with
the subject in the box.

E. Independent Practice Choose the correct verb in the parenthesis that agrees with the subject.

4. My pupils (is, are) excited to visit the Butterfly Garden.
5. We (live, lives) in a world full of wonders.

IV. EVALUATION Choose the correct verb in the parenthesis that agrees with the subject.
