INTERPRETATIONS AND RESULTS:

Table 17.1
From table 17.2, we see that r12 = 0.943, r23 = 0.495 and r13 = 0.576

Table 17.2

From the table,

Partial correlation coefficients:

r 12−r 13 r 23
r 12.3= =0.926231
√(1−r 13)(1−r 23)
2 2

Partial correlation coefficient between weight and mean body weight is 0.926231 when effect of mean daily calorie
intake is eliminated from them which implies that there is a strong positive correlation between them.

r 23−r 12 r 13
r 23.1= =−0.177061
√(1−r 2
12
2
)(1−r 13)
Partial correlation coefficient between mean daily calorie intake and mean body weight is -0.177061 when effect of
weight is eliminated from them which implies that there is a negative correlation between them.

r 13−r 12 r 23
r 13.2= =0.377696
√(1−r 12)(1−r 23)
2 2

Partial correlation coefficient between weight and mean daily calorie intake is 0.377696 when effect of mean body
weight is eliminated from them which implies that there is a positive correlation between them.

Multiple correlation coefficients:

2 r 12 +r 13−2 r 12 r 23 r 13
R 1.23 = 2
=0.905048
1−r 23

Multiple correlation coefficient between weight and joint effect of mean body weight and mean daily calorie intake is
0.905048 which implies that there is a strong positive correlation between them.

2 2
2 r 12 +r 23−2 r 12 r 13 r 23
R 2.13 = 2
=0.892721
1−r 13

Multiple correlation coefficient between mean body weight and joint effect of weight and mean daily calorie intake is
0.892721 which implies that there is a strong positive correlation between them.
