▪ For recognition, make sure you are presentable with clear
communication. Cover knowledge of subject matter, personality traits
and issues of diversity.
• Defining Terms for Audiences
o Options to define terms for the audience can be organized into: high-tech, low-
tech, lay and multiple audiences.
o Using extended definitions and glossary with examples can help.
o Pop ups and links with definitions helps clarify as well.
• Audience Personality Traits
o Consider the audience level of knowledge by understanding personalities.
• Biased Language--Issues of Diversity
o Diversity includes: gender, race, ethnicity, age, religion, culture, sexual
orientation, class, physical and mental characteristics and language
o Language needs to recognize the importance of a multicultural audiences.
Manuals and project team environments may need to be printed in different
languages.

o To facilitate understanding:
▪ Define acronyms and abbreviations.
▪ Avoid jargon and idiom.

• Avoiding Biased Language
o To avoid based language, take into consideration the audience: age, physical
limitations and gender.
o Some examples would be: people with disabilities, sexist language, stereotyping.
• Audience Involvement
o Beyond knowing what your writing about, we need to involve the reader by:
using a personalized tone (for example pronouns and names).
o Achieve audience involvement is to motivate readers by giving them what they
want and need.

o The writing process contains: prewriting, writing and rewriting.
o Use workplace English for clarity.
o Avoid being too wordy.
