NAME

(3)

AIM

To investigate the relationships between pressure and volume of the gas when the temperature is constant for
Boyle’s Law. This experiment also investigates the relationships between volume of gas and temperature
when the pressure is constant for Charles Law.

PROCEDURE
Please refer to page 38-41 of the laboratory manual.

RESULTS & QUESTIONS

2 690 mm Hg 29.2 mL 20148.0
3 726 mm Hg 27.8 mL 20182.8

5 843 mm Hg 24.0 mL 20232.0
6 914 mm Hg 22.2 mL 20290.8

1. How do the values for the P  V product compare to each other?

The values of P X V product increases when the pressure increases and volume of gas decreases.

2. According to your graph, what is the relationship between pressure and volume?
Volume (V), is inversely proportional to the pressure (P). When the pressure of gas increases, the volume of
gas decreases.

3. On your graph, what is the volume of the gas at a pressure of 760 mm Hg?
26.48 mL
4. On your graph, what is the pressure of the gas when the volume is 30.0 mL?
672mm Hg

5. Complete the following when T and n remain constant:

1. According to your graph, what is the predicted Kelvin temperature of absolute zero?
-111.446 mL (When the volume of gas is 0 it means that the absolute zero is reached)

2. How does your predicted value for absolute temperature compare with the accepted value of 0 K?
Y= mx+cA

-0.96837x = -111.446
x=163K

3. Using your graph, how are temperature and volume related?

The volume (V), is directly proportional to the temperature (T).

4. Indicate the change expected when pressure is held constant for a given amount of gas.

CONCLUSION

In this experiment we proved that both Boyle’s Law and Charles’s Law are correct. The volume (V), of the
gas is inversely proportional to the pressure (P) of the gas when the temperature is constant; and The volume
(V) of the gase is directly proportional to the temperature (T) of the gase when the pressure (P) is constant.

Graph of the Charles’s Law experiment
The volume (V) of the gas is directly proportional to the temperature (T) of the gas when the pressure (P) is
constant.
The volume (V) of gas inside the flask is 0 mL when the temperature is -272K.
The volume (V) of gas inside the flask increases when we use the higher temperature of cold bath.

REFERENCES

The volume (V) of a given mass of gas at a constant temperature is inversely proportional to its pressure (p),
i.e. pV = constant. This is true only for an ideal gas.
