1. INTRODUCTION

For MBA student, it is important to get theory and practical


knowledge. With the help of Summer Training Project we
experienced practical knowledge.
I have done my summer training in NATH BIO-GENES(I)
Limited, the theory which we have learnt in campus we executed it
practically in the organization.
In this project whichever activities are occurred in an
organization those activities lead to achieve goals of the organization.
I have also understood that a single activity cannot be
missed out, because every activity is equally important.
So, this project will give the information about organization
and its departmental functioning and study of Marketing,Purchase,
Store, Packaging, Quality, Finance, Human Resource all these
departments.
In this project I have mentioned Company’s SWOT Analysis,
Findings, and suggestions.

2. COMPANY PROFILE

INTRODUCTION
Nath Bio-Genes (India) Limited is engaged in hybrid seed
business. The Company is engaged in the business of production,
processing and marketing of hybrid and genetically modified (GM)
seeds. The Company’s segments include agricultural activities (seed
production) and trading activities. Its products include field crops,
cereals, fibre and oil seeds, vegetable crops and micro nutrient
supplements. Its cereals range includes maize, paddy, pearl millet,
wheat and jowar. It offers fiber and oils seeds, such as cotton, mustard
and sunflower. Its nutritional supplements include Win-Chi-Win and
Bio-Energy. Its vegetable crop range includes chilli, okra, tomato,
bottle gourd, bitter gourd, cucumber and coriander. The Company has
seed processing facilities with approximately 10 processing plants
located in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. It also has processing
arrangements in Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh
and Rajasthan on custom basis.
Nath Bio- Genes (I) Ltd, amongst the top players in the Indian seed
industry, has served Indian farmers for more than four decades. The
company has played a pivotal role in shaping Indian agriculture by
developing and supplying quality hybrids seeds to farmers. The
company has a presence in 17 over states and markets approximately
150 varieties of seed products to more than 5 million farmers across
the country.

HISTORY

Nath group is a well diversified group having interests in paper,


seeds, agro-research plantation, biotechnologies, pharmaceuticals &
chemicals. Nath Bio-Genes is amongst the pioneering seed companies in
India. Founded in 1979, thirty years standing, it is amongst the most
experienced seed companies in India: almost as old as the industry itself.
The Company was originally incorporated in the name and style of
SHIVNATH FARMS PRIVATE LIMITED under the Companies Act,
1956 as Private Limited Company which was converted into Public
Limited Company on 13th day of September 2000 under the name and
style of SHIVNATH FARMS LTD. under the provisions of the
Companies Act, 1956 in the state of Maharashtra, and later changed the
name as NATH BIO-GENES (INDIA) LTD., on 5th March, 2001 vide
Certificate of Incorporation No. 11-72842 dated 5th March, 2001 issued
by the Registrar of Companies, Maharashtra, Mumbai. The Registered
Office of the Company is situated at Nath House, Nath Road,
Aurangabad – 431 005.
Pursuant to the Scheme of Arrangement approved by the Hon'ble High
Court of Bombay vide itsorder dated 27.08.2003, the entire business and
assets of Seeds Division of Nath Seeds Limited (Transferor Company)
stand transferred to and vested in Nath Bio-Genes (India) Limited
(Transferee Company) w.e.f. 1st January, 2001.

Quality Policy
The quality policy of Nath Bio-Genes ensures meeting world class
quality standards so that the farmers get optimal yields that maximize
their profitability, keeping total quality management in view.
NBIL has one of the most stringent and systematic Seed Testing
Laboratories at Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. The team conducts
regular field inspection in entire production area. Also Genetic Purity
tests are conducted to check germination of lots regularly. It is a
consistent endeavor to ensure that the seeds are produced under best
conditions and that all seed lots are of highest genetic purity. Every seed
lot that comes into the Processing Plants is sampled and tested for
Physical Appearance, Moisture, Other Distinguishable Varieties
presence, Physical Purity, Treatment, Genetic Purity, Germination, vigor
and Soil emergence and reported. The Genetically Modified Crops
undergo the ELISA test to ensure Gene Purity. Quality Assurance is also
nvolved in Foundation Seed Production inspection and Processing Plant
inspection during processing and packing. Every year more than 2 lakh
quality checks are conducted throughout the supply chain process in
accordance with the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA)
before packing & dispatch of seeds to marketing centers.

1. CEREALS

a) Maize:
Big Boss

 Full season maturity (110-115 days in Kharif, 125-165


days in Rabi) single cross hybrid
 Orange yellow semi-dent bold grains
 High input responsive
 Tolerant to leaf blight disease
 Yield potential: 38-40 qt/acre

b) Paddy:
Loknath-505

 Long slender non-aromatic grains,


 medium maturity (130-135 days).
 Semi-tall (110-115 cm), non-logging.
 Yield potential: 7-8 tons/ha.
 Probably the best product for low-land irrigated
 conditions, especially due to its high-level tolerance to
water-logging.

c) Pearl Millet:
Big B (NBH-1188)

 Tall hybrid (240-270 cm) & resistant to lodging.


 Medium maturity (82-85 days), Downy Mildew
resistant.
 Long, highly compact, cylindrical panicles.
 Good quality fodder with very high weight.
 High grain yield under sandy-loam soils in North
India (especially Rajasthan, Haryana & Western
UP). Attractive grain color (light gray), so fetching
good commercial value.

f) Mustard:

 Bold, blackish brown grains. High oil content (40-
42%)
 Vigorous plant with good branching.
 Tolerant to powdery mildew, white rust and aphids.
 Medium maturity (125-130 days.)
 Very high yield potential (12-15 qtl/acre).

g) Sunflower:
Suryanath-666+
 Plant Height: 160-190 cm.
 Crop Duration: 80-85 days.
 Flowers convex, 20-25 cm dia with full seed setting.
 Oil content: 40-44%
 Tolerant to virus disease.

2. VEGETABLES

a) Coriander:
Evergreen
 Multi cut variety.
 Plant height is 60-70 cm.
 8-10 tillers per plant.
 Very pleasing flavor.
 Suitable for round the year cultivation.

b) Tomato:
Abhiman (NTH-1222)
 Fruit size: 80-100 gms.
 Fruits will be ready for harvest in 60-70 days from

MARKETING:

As very aptly said by the world’s Marketing Guru, Mr. Philip


Kotler, “…Marketing begins with the identification of customer needs.”
The prime focus of the company and employees is on its target
beneficiaries, the farmers of our country.
The company is currently engaged in marketing of over 90
products in 20 crops including cereals, vegetables, oilseeds and cotton. It
has a national presence with a robust and ever expanding
marketing centered network
across India. The marketing network of the company is
a spread across all the states of India with 14 offices, around 1000
distributors and a pool of 20000 dealers and sub-dealers. The company
devotes a lot of time and attention to the distributors in key and
emerging markets. Holding regular interactions, at the local and head
offices, ensures durable relationships. Specially designated field officers
called Nath Farmer Advisors are a part of the company’s field force
who constantly visit villages and talukas to guide the progressive
farmers and others on various subjects like agronomical practices, latest
products offerings of Nath and crop management techniques. This is
done with an aim to help our farmers reap a bountiful crop and enhanced
revenues.
The company has an exceptional on-field sales and marketing team
which comprises of 40% of the workforce. The regional and territory
managers are provided with all necessary tools and trainings to extend
best services and guidance to our farmers. We regularly conduct
promotional activities comprising field days, field visits, jeep
campaigns, Krishi Melas to ensure that our customers, the farmers,
are equipped with the latest information to maximize yield.
Innovative ideas for improvement in on- field customer services are

adopted without delay.
Nath Bio-Genes has started the project “Nath Farmer Helpline” a
toll free service for the benefit of farmers who can communicate their
queries regarding products of Nath with an aim to maximize yield.
Through this program the company also reaches out to customers using
the mobile platform to educate them on the crop agronomy, pest and
diseases management, weed management and post harvest management
of our products. These services are offered as a contribution to the
farming community with no commercial objective.

FINANCE:

The internal financial controls (IFC) framework at Nath Bio-Genes


(India) Ltd encompasses internal controls over financial reporting (ICOFR)
as well as operational controls that have been put in place across all key
business processes of the Company. The achievement of the Company’s
business objectives and such controls do enable the Company to adapt to
changing and operating environment, to mitigate risks to acceptable levels
and to support sound decision making and good governance. Details in
respect of adequacy of internal financial controls with reference to the
financial statements are briefly iterated below:

controls, whether the workflow of the organization is being done
through the approved policies of the Company. In every quarter, during
the approval of financial statements, internal auditors present the internal
audit report and the management comments on the internal audit

such as related party
transactions policy, whistle blower policy, policy to determine material
subsidiaries and such other procedures for ensuring the orderly and
efficient conduct of its business for safeguarding of its assets, the

completeness of the accounting records, and the timely preparation of
reliable financial information.

PRODUCTION OPERATIONS:

Nath Bio-Genes undertakes seed production in over 30,000 acres


of land with about 25,000 farmers and 72 technically qualified,
financially sound organizers in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat,
Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya
Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. We assure good seed quality following
rigorous field standards throughout the seed production process which is
closely monitored by the team of production staff. This helps to ensure
that only those seeds which meet the stringent quality control standards
reach the processing centers of the company. We require foundation
seed with 99.5% genetic purity in all crops which will result in better
quality production. We constantly strive to build and improve
relationships with the production growers & organizers to ensure loyalty
and commitment. Our efforts of connecting with them on a personal
level, understanding their constraints, and providing them necessary
training in seed production have led to fruitful results.

PROCESSING:

The company has elaborate seed processing facilities with 10


Processing Plants located in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. The
company also has processing arrangements in Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil
Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on custom basis. The seeds
received from growers are processed to achieve quality standards which
surpass those prescribed by the regulatory authorities. All the plants are
equipped with pre-cleaner, fine cleaner, grader, gravity separator, de-
stoner, indented cylinder, treater, needle separator and packing machines
which are fully automated. The company has independent facilities for
ginning, de-linting, drying, processing, treating, packing and storage of
seeds. The seed processing quality is taken to the next level by ensuring
improvements in seed viability and prolonging the shelf life of seeds. All
the packing material has best environmental barriers characteristics to
guarantee optimal storage conditions for the seed.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT:

In addition to the modern laboratories located at the Head Office,


Aurangabad, NBIL has three major R&D Farms located in the vicinity
of the Head Office:
 The one at Isarwadi (~35 kms from Aurangabad) is spread over
150 acres. This farm focuses mainly on rain-fed ecosystems and
seed increase; ii) The Wahegaon Farm of over 40 acres is dedicated
exclusively to irrigated and high management product
development, and iii) The last one at Gevrai, (~10kms from the
head office), is exclusively focused on vegetable crops research.
 In addition to Research Farms at Aurangabad, there are three major
R&D sub-stations: The one at Medchal (Andhra Pradesh) and the
other one at Faizabad (UP) are predominantly focused on Rice,
whereas, the third sub-station at Abohar (Punjab) caters to the
R&D needs of Cotton in particular. A fourth one is being
developed in Andhra Pradesh, exclusively for vegetable crops.
Besides these main sub-stations, Field Trial Stations are spread all
across the country, many of them on semi-permanent basis but
scores of them on seasonal basis.

 Helps a trainee or an employee to understand the work
environment.
 The company has more focus on adequate supply of the seeds

 NATH BIO-GENES (I) LTD.working environment is professional


in nature.
 Makes one realize the difference between theoretical and actual
work.
 HR is the major part of business, you should maintain good
human relationship in order to run business smoothly.
 I have done my work under supervision of Mr. Sunil Gadekar,
who taught me the work related with HR and gave an
opportunity to do the work as an employee would do.
 Learned the documentations, procedures of recruitment,
selection, induction, and many more.
 Learned to handle various online portals too.
