- 3.PK.5: Listen and respond to rhythm or rhyme, (e.g., clapping or chanting).
- 4.PK.7: With teacher assistance, follow, a simple pictorial direction
- 8.PK.4b: Share ideas and information from personal and share group experiences.
- G6.PK.2: Begin to recognize characteristics that make them unique.

2. Objectives:SWBAT + Bloom’s verb


- Students will be able to identify words that rhyme
- Students will be able to create a poem based on letters of their name
- Students will be able to create a drawing for their poem
- Students will be able to present their poems to the class

3. Materials/Equipment:
- Paper
- Pencils
- Markers
- Color pencils

4. Teaching:
A. Plan for reading the book
- Carpet circle time to read the book aloud to the children
- Encourage clapping when rhyming is heard
- Discuss the book’s illustrations
- Ask students what words rhyme together from the book
- Encourage and allow time for students to ask any questions or to share any of their
experiences
- Ask students to go back to their seats to prepare for the activity
B. Plan for extension activity:
- Explain that students will create a poem from the letters of their name
- Explain the poem needs to include their favorite things and interests
- Show an example of a name poem
- Explain that students will create a drawing correlating to their poem
- Allow students 30 minutes to create their poem
- Allow students 10 minutes to create their drawing

5. Closure:
- Students will present their poem to the class
- Students will leave their poem and drawing at their desks for grading
- Student’s ticket out the door will be to explain if their poem was humorous, narrative,
lyrical, or free-verse.
- Students will be asked what they learned (about poems or poetry)
- Tell students that we will continue to learn about the different forms of poetry throughout
the week
