Subject El0218 Subject Introduction to AC Dc
Code: Name: Machines
Date: 22/5/2021 Time: 11:30 to 1:00PM
Day: Saturday Total Marks: 40

Instructions:
1. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
2. Make Suitable assumptions wherever necessary & indicate.

Q.1 (a) Describe different parts of a d.c. machine; their material and functions 05
with the help of a neat diagram.

(b) Why is a starter required in a dc shunt motor? Explain the working of 3- 05

point starter with the help of a neat diagram.

(c) Discuss load speed-torque characteristics of d.c. shunt, series, and 05

compound motors. Also state their applications.

Q-2 (a) A 250 volts dc shunt motor having an armature resistance of 0.25 Ω 05
carries an armature current of 50A and runs at 750 rpm. If the flux is
reduced by 10% by field regulator, find the speed assuming load torque
remains the same.

OR

(a) Derive the expression of e.m.f. developed in a DC generator. 05

(b) Derive the expression for the torque developed in the d.c motor. 05

OR

(b) Compare different types of Dc motors based on their characteristics, 05

applications, advantages and disadvantages.

Q-3 (a) A shunt generator supplies 96A at a terminal voltage of 200V. The 05
armature and shunt field resistances are 0.1Ω and 50 Ω respectively. The
iron and frictional losses are 2500 W. Find the (i) emf generated (ii)
copper losses (iii) efficiency.

OR

Q-3 (a) A 120 V dc shunt motor having an armature circuit resistance of 0.2 Ω 05
and field resistance of 60ohm, draws a line current of 40A at full load.
The brush voltage drop is 3V and rated full load speed is 1800 rpm.
Calculate :(a) the speed at half load; (b) the speed at 125% of full load.

Q-3 (b) Derive the condition for the maximum efficiency in DC generator. 05

Q-3 (c) A 250 V shunt motor on no load runs at 1000 rpm and takes 5A. The 05
total armature and shunt field resistance are 0.2Ω and 250Ω
respectively. Calculate the speed when loaded and taking current of 50
A if the armature reaction weakens the field by 3%.
