Hackman identified the conditions which increases the chance of team becoming successful and

called them as Five Factor Model. Those were

● Being a real team
● Compelling direction
● Enabling structure
● Supportive context and
● Expert coaching
The worst experience working in a team was the Football team in the high school where we
failed miserably. We had the shared task and the boundary was set who were in the team and
who were not. We also had the goal of winning the trophy. That was challenging as it was not
that long our team had started training. But we all badly wanted to win the trophy and that would
be first of its kind for the college also. The team had also determined each other’s responsibilities
and determined each one's duties.
But the real problem arise when the team had to execute the duties. As we all were in our teens
we had ego problems and our social skills were more concerned with what I say is right. The
norms that were built were not followed. We also did not had support from the college
financially which made it even worse and many of the team member had a feeling that we are
doing it for the name of the college but the college is not supporting us. The reward,
development and the information from the college management side was not motivating. Also
the reason for the failure was that we didn’t had a coach who could lead us, show our faults,
make u discipline and motivate us that our personal egos are less important than the trophy. We
all were too confident on us not knowing the limitation that a single person cannot win the
trophy but it is the group that wins the trophy.
While connecting with the Hackman’s research of why some group were effective and why some
were not, I came to the conclusion that among the three attributes that successful team has (they
satisfy internal and external clients, they develop capabilities to perform in the future and the
members find meaning and satisfaction within group), I found that that we were not able to
develop the capabilities to perform within the team. We were good players individually but not
as a team ("Richard Hackman's 'Five Factor Model'", 2004)
Storming stage is often called as the testing time where the policies and assumptions are tested
and the leader try to fit in the structure. The group becomes more competitive, defensive and
jealous. Some of the strategies are:
Conflict should not only be viewed negatively but rather view it as a normal process and all
members should have a sense that their opinions are also being considered. This can be done by
not allowing one individual dominate the conversation and discussions. Also all the members
should be supported and remaining positive can be the key in the transition. Other techniques for
the transition could be delegating the decision to the team but also being present to resolve the
conflicts and focusing the team towards the goals i.e. the mantra at this stage being Focus,
Streamline and Innovate (Elkaslassy, n.d.)

Hi Stanley,
Good to see the similar situation being in the football team during high school. The difference
being you had the best experience whereas mine was not pleasant. We also were good
individually but could not create the synergistic effect. Also there was a lack of chain of
command and also the lack of resources derailed the team.
Yes you are right in regard to the storming phase as in this phase all the members want to exert
the power and influence and one may feel left out from the group (Elkaslassy, n.d.).

Hi Cesar,
A very comprehensive writing about the five conditions of Hackman for an effective team. i am
very keen to know was the project successfully completed or not? and if Yes what role did that
one the egoist member played during the project? Your writing showed how important
leadership within the group is and what can happen when there is a compatibility issue.
