DRUG INFORMATION

Drug Classification: Angiotensin Receptor Blocker Generic Name: Losartan

Dosage: 50mg Brand Name: Cozaar

Route of Administration: PO / Oral Route

MODE/ MECHANISM OF ACTION

Losartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It keeps blood vessels from narrowing,
which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

INDICATION CONTRAINDICATION

SIDE EFFECT AND ADVERSE REACTION

 Blurred vision.
 difficult breathing.
 dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position.
 fast or irregular heartbeat.
 nausea or vomiting.
 numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, or lips.
 stomach pain.
 weakness or heaviness of the legs.

Adverse Effect:

 Black, tarry stools

 bleeding gums

 blood in the urine or stools

 coma

 convulsions

 cough

DRUG INTERACTIONS (Drug-Drug, Drug-Food, Drug-Laboratories)

Drug-Drug Interaction:
 Aliskiren

Drug-Food Interaction:
 Potassium supplement
 Potassium-containing salt substitutes (no salt, Morton salt substitutes)
 High potassium foods (noni juice)
 Avoid coffee – drinking coffee can increase your blood pressure. On the other hand, losartan lowers blood
pressure, so drinking coffee while taking losartan will decrease or will not work to the client.

NURSING CONSIDERATIONS/ HEALTH TEACHINGS

 Educate client that they may take losartan with or without food.
 Encourage client to drink water to prevent dehydration
 Advice client to take losartan exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
 Instruct client blood pressure will be checked often.
 Remind client that if they are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even
if they feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure
medication for the rest of your life.
 If you have ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are sweating more than usual. You can easily
become dehydrated while taking this medication, which can lead to severely low blood pressure or a
serious electrolyte imbalance.
 Drinking alcohol can further lower your blood pressure and may increase certain side effects of
losartan.
 Remind client take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost
time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

 Tell the client store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
 Instruct client weight control and changes in the types of foods you eat, especially foods high in
sodium (salt).
 Tell client to not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
 Educate client on how to dispose of any medicine that are not in use.
 It is very important that the doctor check the client’s progress at regular visits to make sure that this
medicine is working properly. Blood and urine tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects.
 Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur after the first dose of this medicine
 Advice the client to not take other medicines unless they have been discussed with their doctor
