Questions 19-26

You are going to read an extract from a short story. Answer the questions follow.
For questions 19 to 24, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and circle the
correct letter A, B, C and D.

It is believed that karate had its beginnings in India. Legend tells us of a

wealthy Indian prince who wanted to be invincible. To achieve this end, he
decided he would need an unbeatable hand-to-hand fighting technique. He
realized that the first thing to do was to find out the weakest places in the human
body so that these spots could be attacked in combat. To get this information, the
prince carried out experiments on human beings. His unfortunate ‘guinea pigs’
were some of the strong young male slaves in his kingdom. He injured the slaves
with needles on their body.
The prince studied the techniques and movements of the beasts of the
6

jungle as they fought. He noted, for instance, how the tiger tensed its body
before spinning into action and how it used its claws to tear its enemy. Together
with his generals, he adapted the animals' movement to the human body. Having
come up with dangerous moves, he experimented on the slaves again, this time
using actual punches and kicks instead of needles on them. It is told that one
hundred slaves died in this second part of the project. And this, according to the
legend, is how the main techniques of hand-to-hand combat were first
discovered. This is a very old Indian legend and one hopes it is not altogether
true. What is true, however, is that a method of weapon less self-defense was
indeed developed in India. These techniques were practised in particular by
Buddhist monks, probably because they were forbidden from carrying weapons
as they travelled about the country.
Karate, one of the most popular forms of martial arts, was developed in
the Ryuku islands, a string of small islands to the south of Japan. In the
fourteenth century, the Ryukus came under the control of China and they
remained under the Chinese influence for the next three centuries. During this
time, the Ryukuans prospered, absorbing a great deal of Chinese culture,
including knowledge in ch'uan fa or boxing. Then, in the seventeenth century, the
Japanese conquered the Ryukus. The Japanese rule was harsh and
impoverished the people, who therefore disliked them intensely. One of their
actions to keep the people under control was to seize and ban all weapons. Left
without weapons for self-protection, the Ryukuans, therefore, needed to
develop a fighting art for empty hands. That is exactly what karate is. Kara
means 'empty'; te means 'hands'. It was here, in the Ryukus, that the name
karate was first used.

Karate is actually an off shoot of ch'uan fa and, thus, something of the

Shaolin tradition of meditation was carried into karate. So, whereas judo has, as
a basis, military discipline and honour, karate is a way of life, based on
meditation.
