PROCEDURE SHEET
Category: B1/B2 Ref. No.: CAR-66/MOD/04 Level: 2
Semester: Third Module: 04 Time allotted: 4 Hrs
SUBJECT: ELECTRONICS FUUNDAMENTALS Lab/Located: Electrical LAB
Reference Documents / Books / Manuals: Principal of Electronics (V.K. MEHTA), Module 4 EASA book.

Aim: Testing of Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR)

Tools / Equipment / Materials Required: SCR Characteristics Kit, DMM, Connecting Wires.

Procedure:
1. The only way to turn on SCR is to give supply voltage between anode & cathode and give a
trigger pulse to the gate.
2. After triggering the gate by applying a voltage once the SCR is switched ON it continuously
conduct and give supply to the load. Now even if gate (trigger) voltage is removed still it will
continuously conduct.
3. The only way to switch OFF SCR now is by reducing the anode & cathode voltage below 1.4V.
4. Set anode to cathode voltage to 20V.
5. Now increase gate control voltage till the SCR starts conducting (Conduction of SCR) will be
shown as load current in the Ammeter.
6. Reduce the Gate control voltage to minimum near Zero , you will find SCR is still conducting &
load current is leading.
7. Reduce the anode & cathode voltage till the SCR stops conducting (i.e. below holding current)
which will show Zero current in Ammeter.
8. Set 20V anode & cathode voltage give gate control voltage till SCR starts conducting. Control
the load link to variable. The load current will very as per LOAD, So this shows forward
conduction of SCR.

Precaution:
1. Increase gate voltage gradually.
2. Don’t put ON supply till links of gate, anode & variable load are connected.
