TikTok Addiction

In our Chapter 9 Statistics project we had to use the article by FameMass, to research
some information about the 2021 social media average time per day. The article said that the
average number of minutes individuals spend on TikTok is 31 minutes. We surveyed 30 Juniors
and Seniors on how many minutes they are on TikTok per day. We did this by sending out a
Google Survey to a random sample of the juniors and seniors. The null hypothesis is H0: μ= 31,
which we found by using the article linked above. The alternative hypothesis is H1: μ> 31, which
means we believe that the average time spent on TikTok per day is higher than what the article
states. The level of significance we chose is .05 and the sample size is 30. The sample mean is
X = 63.433 and the sample standard deviation is s = 80.12. Our degrees of freedom is d.f. = 29.
We found all of these variables by using our Google Spreadsheet.
Using all of this information we then started our one large calculation to find out if the
population mean really is 31 minutes per day on TikTok. Since we were dealing with a sample
we needed to use a normal T-Distribution and table 4. That let us know that we needed to use
the equation: t = ( X - μ) / (s / √n)). We used the numbers above and plugged them into the equation: t =
(63.43 - 31) / (80.12 / (√30)). We used our graphing calculator to enter this equation and ended up with t
= 2.22.
We were then all done with our calculations after finding our t-score. Using the t-score
we went to table 4 in the back of our book. We went to the d.f. Row for 29 and followed across
until we found two numbers that our t-score fell in between. We followed that space up to the
top of the paper for a one tailed, since we were dealing with a greater than, and found that our t-
score was between .010 and .025. If we then put this into a range: .010 < p < .025. This means
that there is between a 1% and 2.5% chance of having a sample mean with a population mean
of 31 minutes per day on TikTok. The last thing we do with the numbers is compare them to our
level of significance. We chose to use .05, or 5%, and our number does not fall into the range.
The last thing we do is interpret the answers and relate it to what this means for daily TikTok
use in minutes.
In the end, we ended up rejecting HO and adopting H1. This makes sense because our
level of significance does not fall into the range. Some reasons why the sample mean could be
significantly larger is because that the average of 31 minutes was found using people
worldwide, not just the United States. We think that the United States watches TikTok more than
most countries. Specifically, the juniors and seniors of our high school watch more TikTok per
day in minutes compared to what the website stated. Our results showed us that it is possible
for the population mean to be larger than 31 minutes per day on TikTok.
