Introduction

The School Based Assessment was conducted with the intention to survey the students from

grade 9 to know if they spend more time on social media than on their academics. Social

networking is the use of internet based social media programs to connect with people with

likeminded interest and share their own feelings and thoughts.

Social networks can be used for social purposes, learning, and marking. Even so, excessive usage

can lead to a decline in academic performance. To understand the students' problem more clearly

a team of student researchers decided to undertake a survey to find out how students bottle with

schoolwork and browse the web.

The objective of this project is:

❖ To investigate the effects of social networking on academic performance

❖ To identify the average number of students affected by social media

❖ To determine whether social media is beneficial to students from grade 9

Consequently, the project was conducted to allow students to see the analyzed data and if

possible, make necessary changes toward the situation.

Discussion Of Finding
10 | P a g e

The researchers have found that students spend more time on social media, than on schoolwork.

The average age of students who spend more time on social media is 14–16-year-old. It was

estimated that students spend 1-3 hour more time on social media while their schoolwork is 30-

45 min. Time spent on social media has increased approximately from 15 minutes to an hour

more than on schoolwork and, Tic Tok is the most popular social media platform. Social media

usage has a significant increase in the year 2020, this is so because students must stay home

during the pandemic. Students also use social media for information.

Conclusion

This research shows that student from grade 9 spend more time on social media than on

schoolwork but most use the media to get valuable information and other use to get help with

their schoolwork, an increased in the year from the start of the pandemic because student must

stay home so they that time to browse the web. Students also post every day and don’t think it

needs a specific time to post. Tik Tok is the most popular platform that is trending. Students

spend 30-45 minute on each subject and 1-3hour on social media.
