LESSON

ELECTRICAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

This lesson will discuss the different types, uses and functions of each tool
and equipment used in electrical installation and maintenance.

The following are common electrical tools and equipment:

PLIERS are hand tool used for gripping, cutting, bending, twisting and making
terminal loops in wires and cables. These are made from hardened metal with
insulated handle. The common types of pliers are:
Combination pliers is a multi-purpose pliers
combining gripping jaws with wire cutters. It
is used for gripping, bending, twisting, and
cutting wires and cables.

Diagonal cutting pliers is used for cutting wires,

cables, screws and small nails. Its blade for
cutting are at an angle to the handles.

Long-nose pliers is a tool that has elongated jaws

with a pointed tip. It is use for making terminal
loops of copper wires. It can reach into tight
spaces that are hard to other types of pliers.

Slip-joint pliers has a corrugated jaws, and the

pivot hole in one handle that can be move to make
a larger jaw to hold or grip bigger material.

SCREWDRIVERS are used to tighten or loosen screws. These tools are made of
hardened and tempered steel shank, the tip is magnetic and has an insulated handle.
It comes in various sizes and shapes.

Philips screwdriver has a cross tip resembling a

positive (+) sign. This is used to drive screws with
cross slot heads.

Flat screwdriver the blade tip is wedge-shaped

and resembles a negative (-) sign. This is used to
drive screws with a single slot head.

Stubby screwdriver it comes in either flat or

Philips head with short stem and a shorted
handle used to turn screws in tight space where
standard screwdriver cannot be used.

HAMMERS these are tools used in driving and pulling out nails. The head is made
of hardened steel, plastic or rubber and the handle is made of wood, plastic or rubber.
The following are types of hammer:

Claw hammer is a tool used for pounding

different materials and for driving and extracting
nails.
Ball peen hammers is commonly used to shape
thin sheets of metal, to drive chisels and rivets.

Mallets are used give a softened strike with a

positive drive so as not to damage the material
being pounded.

SAWING AND CUTTING TOOLS these tools are used to cut and to make
holes in wood, metals, PVC and other materials.

Hacksaw is a fine-toothed saw (18 - 24 teeth per

inch). It is used for cutting metals and other
electrical conduit.

Keyhole saw has a long, slender saw used for

cutting circular hole, often awkward cut on
wooden walls and ceiling.

Pipe cutter is used to make a quick and clean cut

on electrical conduit. It is convenient way of
cutting conduit than using a hacksaw.

MEASURING TOOLS AND INSTRUMENT the electrician uses the

following measuring tools and devices to measure wire, cable and conduit length,
and size. Measures the value of voltage, current and resistance. And for finding
concealed conductors.

Pull push rule is used for measuring the length

of wire, cable and conduits. You have to pull the
tape to make measurement and it goes back when
measuring is done.

Wire gauge is a tool used to measure the diameter

of wires and cables.

Cable detector is a device used for locating wires

and cables concealed in walls and ceilings, in
either plywood or concrete.

Multimeter is an electronic measuring

instrument that combines several measurement
functions in one unit. It measures the value of
voltage, current, and resistance in an electric
circuit.
Clamp ammeter is an electrical test tool that
combines a basic multimeter with a current
sensor on its clamp. The clamp opens to measure
current. The test probes measures voltage and
resistance.

Pen tester a small device with resemblance to a

pen. It is inserted to an electrical outlet to
determine whether the wire is live or not.

SOLDERING TOOLS are used to solder splices, joints and taps connection of
wires and cables.

Soldering iron is a hand tool used to solder

splices and joints on wire connection. It has a
heating element that melts the lead so that it can
flow into the joint between two workpieces.
Soldering gun is like a soldering iron it is used to
solder splices and joints of wire connection but
more powerful because of its higher watts rating.
It has resemblance to a pistol gun.

Blow torch is a fuel-burning tool used for

applying flame to heat copper or aluminum stick
to make splices, joints and taps in copper or
aluminum plates. It is carried in a refillable
reservoir attached to the lamp.

Desoldering pump is a small mechanical device

which sucks the molten lead from the joint where
the components are mounted.

Drilling Equipment is needed to make holes in building structure for passage

of wires and conduit in both new and old installation. Indoor or outdoor wiring.

Electric drill is an electrically

operated tool primarily used for making holes or
driving screws. It is fitted with a drill bit, either
a drill or driver, depending on application,
secured by a chuck. It also include
a hammer function for drilling on concrete.
Auger brace is a hand tool used to drill holes on
wood using an auger bit. Down force is applied to
the top and the tool is rotated with a U-shaped
grip.
Hand drill is the manual version of an electric
drill. The crank is rotated that converts and
amplifies circular motion on the drill chuck to
drill holes.

Drill bits are installed in the chuck of the drill,

the drill will grasp the upper end of a bit and a
chuck key is used to lock the drill bit. Drill bits
come in different size and shaped depending on
the material intended to be drilled.

Gimlet is used to make a pilot hole on wood to

easily drive down the screw.

OTHER ELECTRICAL TOOLS

Electrician’s knife is designed to strip electrical
cable insulation.

Wire stripper is a small, hand-held device used

to strip the electrical insulation from electric
wires.

Terminal crimper has resemblance to a pair of

pliers, but it has a groove jaw used to fix an eye
connector to the end of a wires or cables.

Hickey is used to bend 90 degree or offset

angles in electrical metallic conduit. The head is
curve and has a groove to hold the conduit. It
has a long handle for more leverage when
bending conduit.

Ratchet die stock is a tool used to make a

threads into the end of an electrical metallic
conduit. The dies has a sharp cutting blade
which is inserted to the stock. The dies comes in
different sizes depending on the size of the
conduit to be threaded.
