PICKLEBALL
Suggested Team Size: 2-3
Scoring
Only the serving team can score points.
• Points are scored by legally serving a ball that is not returned by the opponent or by winning the rally.
• Games are played to 11 points and win by 2.
Serving Rules
Service Motion, Positioning, Legal Serve
• The serve must be made with an underhand stroke
• The server must have at least one foot on the court surface behind the baseline
• A serve striking the net and landing within the service court is called a “let” and another serve is justified with no limit to the
number of times this can occur.
Service Bounce Rule
The Two-Bounce Rule: The serve and the service return must be allowed to bounce before striking the ball. That is, each side must
play a groundstroke on the first shot following the serve. After the initial groundstrokes have been made, play may include volleys.
Serve Sequence Rules
o For the team that starts the game, only one person gets to serve.
o The server always starts in the right-hand court and must serve crosscourt (to the backcourt diagonally opposite and beyond the
non-volley zone line).
o The team member serving the initial serve of the game calls the score as “Zero, Zero, Two” meaning I have 0 points, you have 0
points, and I am the only server for this sequence so I’m the 2nd server.
o After scoring a point, the server always re-positions to serve to the other court (changing places with their partner) for the next
serve. You never serve to the same person or serving box twice in a row. Let’s assume they score 2 points and then fault in some
way.
o When that first serving team faults, they transfer or “sideout” the serve to the opposing team.
o The opposing team begins their first serving sequence with the player who is standing on the right-hand side of the court. They
call the score as “Zero, two, one” (my score 0, your score 2, and first server) This team gets a service sequence of two faults (that is,
each person serves until their team makes a fault/fails to score a point).
o The team’s points will always be even numbers when that team’s starting server is positioned on the right-hand side of the court.
Points will always be odd when the starting server is on the left-hand side of the court.
Non-Volley Zone Rules
o The NVZ is the rectangular court surface bounded by the sidelines, the NVZ line, and the net. The air space above the surface of
this area is not part of the NVZ.
o A fault will be declared if a player, player’s clothing, or paddle touches the court within the non-volley zone while volleying the
ball.
o Players may enter the NVZ at any time if they are not or have not hit the ball as a volley.
o Jumping over the NVZ to the out-of-bounds area when volleying a ball is allowed. The lines do not extend upward
Faults
o All faults, including foot faults; touching the net or post; double bounce; ball touching player or clothing in the air; violations of
any rule; can be called by either team.
o When a server’s foot encroaches the court area or is outside the imaginary extension of the sideline and centerline.
o Net support post: Any ball hitting the side posts is a dead ball fault.
o Catching the ball, getting hit: It is a fault to catch the ball and claim it was going out. The ball must bounce on the court surface
without interference.
o Ball hits a player: If the ball touches a player prior to bouncing, whether you are inside or outside the court boundaries, it is a
fault.
o All NVZ violations are faults.
Other Basic Rules
o An “out” ball is not “out” until it bounces. Never catch it or let it hit you in the air.
o Make calls immediately.

SOCCER
Suggested Team Size: 8-10
All players are encouraged to wear shin guards.
Soft cleated shoes are allowed but absolutely no metal or screw-in spikes allowed.
With larger goals, a goalkeeper may be used by each team.
START OF PLAY
Play begins with a place kick toward opponent’s half of the field with both teams in an on-side position. The receiving
team must be eight yards from the ball until it is kicked.
• The ball must roll its circumference or be re-kicked
• A goal cannot be scored from a kickoff
OFFSIDES
Only blatant offsides will be called and thus no "cherry picking."
FOULS AND MISCONDUCTS
The captains will call their own fouls as you would in a pick-up game.
Captains may turn to the IM worker and ask for a decision. All worker decisions are final. Refusal to accept the arbitrator
decision results in a forfeit.
Fouls penalized with a "direct" free kick:
• Handling the ball with hands or arms
• Holding or obstructing an opponent to keep him from playing the ball
• Placing hands on an opponent in an effort to reach the ball
• Pushing, striking, or attempting to strike an opponent
• Jumping at an opponent
• Kicking, attempting to kick or tripping an opponent
• Charging an opponent from behind, when the opponent has both feet off the ground, or using the knee on an
opponent
• Slide tackling and tackling an opponent from a blind side or behind
• Charging a goalie in the goal area
• Using foul or abusive language (swearing loudly or at someone)
• Unsportsmanlike conduct
Fouls penalized with an "indirect" free kick:
• A player playing the ball a second time before it has been played by another player on the kick-off, a throw-in, a
free kick, a corner kick, a goal-kick (if the ball has passed outside the penalty area), or on a penalty kick
• Ball not kicked forward on a penalty kick
• Goalkeeper carrying ball more than four steps within penalty area
• Substitution made at an improper time, or for failure of the substitute to report to the supervisor
• Offsides
• Interfering with goalie or impeding him in any manner until he clears the ball while he is in the goal area
FREE KICKS
Opposing team players must stand eight yards away and the ball must be motionless prior to the kick.
6
ULTIMATE
Suggested Team Size: 7-10
Ultimate is a non-contact sport played by two seven-player-teams. The object of the game is to score goals. The disc may only
be moved by passing, as the thrower is not allowed to take any steps. Any time a pass is incomplete, intercepted, knocked
down or contacts an out-of-bounds area, a turnover occurs, resulting in an immediate change of possession of the disc. A goal
is scored when a player successfully passes the disc to a teammate in the end zone which that team is attacking.
Ultimate has traditionally relied upon a spirit of sportsmanship which places the responsibility of fair play on the player.
Competitive play is encouraged but never at the expense of the bond of mutual respect between players, adherence to the
agreed upon rules of the game or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate adverse conduct
from the ultimate field. Such actions as taunting, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling or other "win-at-all-costs" behavior
are contrary to the spirit of the game and will not be tolerated.
Game length: The game will consist of two 25-minute halves. If tied at the end of regulation, there will be an overtime period
(not sudden death) to the end of the scheduled time. If still ties, the game ends in a tie.
Team format: Captains may decide on the number of players. There will be a maximum of seven players (no more than four
of one gender may play at a time), and a minimum of three players, or a team must forfeit. If the captains cannot agree, the
default number will be seven players.
7
VOLLEYBALL
Suggested Team Size: 8
A match is 2 out of 3 sets (or 45 minutes). Rally scoring is used in every set.
The first two games are to 25 points or win by 2 points. If needed, the third game is to 15 points or win by 2 points (capped
at 17 points during regular season).
If the match is not over when the 45-minute time limit expires, the following will happen:
- If the 45 minutes hits in the second set, the team that is ahead will be declared the winner. If this ties the match (1-
1), the third game will start and will go to 7 points.
- If the 45 minutes hits in the third set, whoever has scored 7 or more points will be declared the winner. If neither
team has 7 points, the game will continue to 7 points only.
- Ties will be recorded without a tiebreaker during regular season league play. General rules follow the National
Federation of State High School Associations volleyball rules.
- Each team is allowed 1 timeout per set.
- Substitutions can only be made in the server position.
- If a ball hits anything directly above the court (basketball hoop, light, etc.) and comes down on the side of the team
that hit the ball it is still in play. If the ball hits directly above the court and comes down on the opposing side it is
deemed dead.
- If a ball touches the wall, the floor, antennas, the net outside of the antennas, a non-player/referee, the ceiling
above the opponent’s playing area, or enters a non-playable area (adjacent courts) it is deemed dead. When
retossing a serve, the ball must land outside of the court (in the serving area) and not hit any part of the server's
body.
- Illegal blocking: Blocking or attacking a serve is not legal -Back row players cannot block
- -The ball must cross the plane of the net before a play or block can be made. No reaching over the net to make a
play on the ball If any part of a player's body (that is not clothing or hair) touches the net, a net violation will be
called and a point will be given to the opposing team.
- Coed Specific Rules - Positions on the floor must be alternating (male-female). (There are no restrictions for
female/male contact with the ball.)
