disorders (or illnesses) are conditions which
affect the way an individual thinks, feels and
behaves; making it difficult to live a normal
life.

What are the Causes of Mental Disorders?

While the exact causes of mental disorders are still unknown up to this day, there
are a number contributing factors that increases the risk of developing the illness
such as:
• Heredity or family history
• Traumatic experiences such as stressful events or childhood abuse
• Chemical imbalances in the brain
• Exposure to toxic chemicals or viruses of a pregnant mother
• Substance abuse (drugs, alcohol, etc.)
• Traumatic head injury or brain infection

What are the Types of Mental Disorders?

There are many types of Mental Disorders, but the common ones are:
1. Anxiety Disorders
2. Mood Disorders
3. Eating Disorders
4. Personality Disorders
5. Schizophrenia

What are Some of the Red Flags or Early Warning Signs to Look Out For?

What are the Practical Ways to Help Oneself When These Warning Signs
Occur?

• Pay close attention to the signs and symptoms and share it out to a family
member or someone you trust;
• seek professional help immediately;
• make an initiative to change your lifestyle such as getting enough sleep
and sleeping on time, eat a well-balanced diet, learn to manage your
temper and stress through relaxation techniques and make an effort to
organize your everyday life;
• get support from family/friends and;
• avoid substance (alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc.) use/abuse.

How to Help Someone You Know Who Might Be Experiencing a Mental
Disorder?

G – Gather: Observe, gather information, ask others, and watch out for
warning signs.
R – Respond: Talk and listen without judging the person and give reassurance.
I – Involve others: Encourage the person to seek help from mental health
specialists.
P – Plan: Motivate the person to utilize self-help techniques such as support
groups, medication compliance and stress management.

Bear in mind though that only certified mental health professionals can diagnose
if someone has a mental disorder or not.

Remember, mental disorders are medical conditions, not a character flaw and it
is quite common. These are triggered by a combination of risk factors, but a range 1
of treatments are used in the management of the illness. Identifying the early
warning signs and getting help is an important step for prevention and recovery.
