Before the CS150 software can be used to print jobs, your printers must
be set up for use with the controller and its software. Printer setup
information is saved in a system information file (*.bwi). Any database to
be used as a print source must be configured for printing. This
configuration, which includes field and record definition as well as print
layout, is saved in a configuration file (*.bcf). Once the printers and
databases have been configured, a print job can be started by selecting a
printer and loading a configuration file (*.bcf).
An optional CS150 module called Read and Image allows a user with a
camera system (or barcode reader, magnetic strip reader, or optical
character reader [OCR]) and a Versamark printing system to personalize
print products based on a customer number.
Special CS150 options such as Read and Image are enabled by the
installation of a programmed HASP key (see the online Help or the next
section of this guide).
Installation Before you install the CS150 software you must install a HASP software
protection key.
Note: If your are upgrading or re-installing the CS150 software, uninstall the
existing version of the CS150 software first, and then reboot the CS150
PC. Then follow the listed installation steps. You can view the Readme file
on the CS150 CD for additional information.
• If you are installing the CS150 software for the first time, perform all
the steps in this section.
1. Connect the HASP key to any parallel port or USB port of the PC.
Figure 1.1 shows a connected parallel port HASP key. (If you are
Parallel port HASP key upgrading your copy of the CS150 software, replace your old HASP
key with the new HASP key, and return the old HASP key for credit.)
Note: If you already had a HASP key and received a new one, replace
your old HASP key with the new HASP key and return the old key
USB port HASP key
to Kodak Versamark in accordance with the instructions attached to
the new key.
If you are using a parallel port HASP key, you can still use any hard-
ware device (such as a printer) that may be connected to this port by
connecting the parallel cable from the device to the back of the HASP
key. In order for the parallel port HASP key to work properly, the hard-
ware device (such as a printer) connected to the port must be pow-
ered on.
Note: If a valid HASP key is not detected by the CS150 software, the
software will start in Demo mode, described in “Demo Mode” on
page 4.
5. Click Next.
Driver installation begins.
8. Click Next.
The Choose Destination Location window appears.
9. If you wish, you may specify a destination folder for the CS150 pro-
gram files. To simply accept the default location (recommended), click
Next.
10. Now, if you wish, you may specify a destination folder for the CS150
data files. To simply accept the default location (recommended), click
Next.
11. In the Font Manager dialog, specify whether or not you wish to install
the Font Manager software by selecting Yes or No. Then click Next.
You can now start the CS150 software by double-clicking the Dashboard
icon on the WINDOWS desktop or by selecting Programs → Kodak →
Dashboard from the WINDOWS Start menu.
Demo Mode In order to enable and protect the CS150 software, a HASP key (shown
below), a small hardware item that plugs into a parallel port or USB port,
is delivered with every CS150 package. For the HASP key to be active, it
must be inserted into one of the PC’s parallel or USB ports and the HASP
device driver must be installed.
If a valid HASP key is not present or if the HASP device driver is not
installed, the CS150 software will start in Demo mode.
In this Demonstration (or ‘Demo’) mode, most of the CS150 features are
available, so you can get a good idea of what the software can do.
However, a few limitations are built in, including the following:
If you do not want to operate in Demo mode, try one of these actions:
USB port HASP key • If the HASP key is missing, try to find it and ask your system manager
to insert it in a parallel or USB port.
Online Help All the information about actually using the CS150 software is located in
the software’s online Help.
dot 1. The smallest mark that can be printed by the printing system.
2. The distance between pixels (dots) in the printed image. For example,
with a 240-dpi resolution, a distance of 1 dot equals 1/240 inch.
dot gain The tendency for a printed dot to grow larger than the spot it is
filling. Dot gain is necessary to obtain 100 percent coverage.
dpi Dots per inch, a measure of resolution.
error diffusion A dithering algorithm that uses constant-sized dots but
disperses the dots in patterns with a variable amount of space between
them. (Also known as stochastic screening or frequency-modulated (FM)
screening.)
filament A short, continuous stream of ink that extends from the orifice,
which is broken into drops by the measured application of a physical
vibration. See also orifice.
fixed data Print fields containing text and/or graphics that are printed
on every document or on selected documents. See also variable data.
fixed text A text message composed during data preparation that can
be printed on every document or on selected documents. Also called
fixed message.
font A collection of characters that have the same typeface, style,
weight, and point size. In Versamark printing systems, fonts can also
contain graphics identified by one or more characters.
halftone image A bi-level image, usually black and white, where the
illusion of gray levels is obtained by varying either the size and shape of
the dots or the spacing between uniformly-sized dots.
image A pattern of filled and unfilled dots. It can be a character, a line of
characters, or a graphic.
inkjet The stream of ink made up of the filament and drops coming from
one orifice.
jet The stream of ink made up of the filament and drops coming from
one orifice.
job file A file that contains information describing a print job to be run.
The file can contain setup information, fixed messages, font information,
and variable data.
orifice A small hole through which pressurized ink extends in a
filament.
page buffer Memory in a RIP in which pages are assembled for
printing. The buffer size is RIP dependent.
