GEMS OF HOMOEOPATHIC MATERIA MEDICA 7

CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING OF

MATERIA MEDICA

After testing the homoeopathic medicines on healthy

human beings, carefully and faithfully recording all altered
functions experienced by the prover and observing all
subjective and objective symptoms, we can build up a real
materia medica. Thus, materia medica is a store house of
each and every action or reaction of the drug in a healthy
human being.
Hahnemann called his materia medica 'pure' (Pura)
because it consists of the symptoms written in the unaltered
language of the provers themselves and admits no misin-
terpretations with changing medical terminology, altered
biological conceptions and newer scientific attitudes.
Hahnemann followed an anatomical schema (from
head to foot) in recording the positive drug - effects and
under each rubric or heading he collected and put all the
symptoms from as many provers as there were in each case.
Dr. Hughes does not agree with Hahnemann's sche-
matic method, and in writing his materia medica com-
mented. "It is an unnatural and artificial arrangement of
the features of many allied morbid portraits, as though an
artist should paint a family group arranging all the eyes,
of all the members of the family in one part of the picture,
all noses in another, the ears all together and so on."
Thus with various permutations and combinations of
disease - elements as recorded in the materia medica, the
adaptability of it may be increased to a great extent in the
art of finding a similar remedy for natural diseases.

the pathological changes occurring in the animal's body. It

is also a source to build up materia medica.

Clinical Observation -
In practice after the application of the medicine to the
patient, we can observe some new symptoms produced by
the medicine which have not been observed in the proving
of that medicine.

Accidental Source -
Some medicines are prepared from substances whose
curative action is accidentally discovered e. g. Blatta
orientalis in asthma.

Toxicological Source -
Signs and symptoms produced due to the toxic effects
of drugs can be obtained where, unfortunately over dosing
has occured. From which we can understand the drug upto
some extent.

Chemical Source -
We can understand & get some clue of signs &
symptoms of the drugs by studying its chemistry i. e.
physical & chemical properties, action etc. But as the
human being is itself a big chemical factory, the actual signs
& symptoms produced by the drugs in the body maybe
different. But by studying the chemistry of drugs we can
get some idea of its action on the body.

Empirical Source -
It is a traditional source. This can be observed from the
general therapeutic study of a drug. In olden days, the
therapeutic value of many drugs where known.
