2.2 General Safety Notes

The following paragraph lists remaining risks which may be incurred when the machine is used
according to its intended use.

The safety notes indicated here and in the following paragraphs must be observed in order to
reduce potential risks of personal injury and material damage as well as to avoid dangerous
situations.

■ The operating manual must be available to operating and maintenance staff at all times.
■ Only use the machine for its intended use.
■ The national accident prevention regulations must be observed by the operating and
maintenance staff.
The operating and maintenance staff must be instructed about the operating manual and
other compulsory regulations with regard to accident prevention.

■ The two-way valve must only be put in operation after the installation work has been
completely finished. All the protection and safety equipment must work properly.

BA_KK_EN_02-2014 11
Two Way Valve | Safety Notes

■ The two-way valve must be operated only with the feeding and discharge pipes connected.
Operating the two-way valve without connected pipes or machines is not permitted because
of the risk of being crushed by the internal flap.

■ The connections of the two-way valve are designed in such a way that additional loads such
as climbing on the piping is permitted.

■ Before the start of operation the assembly, operating and maintenance staff must be
instructed about the content of the operating manual by the person responsible for the
operational area. This activity should also be formally documented.

■ Changes and repairs to the machine may only be performed by specialized staff authorized
by the manufacturer or the customer service department of the manufacturer. Use of the
machine for purposes other than the intended one will be the exclusive responsibility of the
user.

■ Maintenance intervals and lubrication periods indicated in the operating manual must be
observed.

■ If safety and protection devices are determined to be ineffective, the machine must be taken
out of operation and secured against inadvertent operation. The machine may only be put
back into service after authorized maintenance and repair.

■ Maintenance and repairs may only be done after the main switch was switched off and
secured against inadvertent switching on.

■ The two-way valve must be regularly checked for operational safety. There must not be a
start-up without any safety and reliability.

The two-way valves are made of bolted sheet steel. They are available in symmetric and
asymmetric construction.

The inlet (Fig. 2/1) of the two-way valve houses a flap (Fig. 2/2) equipped with plastic wear
plates. The flap directs the product flow to the required outlet (Fig. 2/4) by switching. Two
angles (Fig. 2/3) inside the two-way valve seal the flap against the housing to ensure a sorted
transport.

The flap is driven at option by:

■ a lever (manual),
■ a chain wheel (manual),
■ a pneumatic cylinder or
■ a gear motor.
If the two-way valve is equipped with a gear motor inductive sensors as an end-position control
and as a position indicator are used in standard. These sensors are optionally available for any
other types of drive.

WARNING
Life-threatening danger due to improper transport.

When handling loads only chains and ropes must be used which are very
reliable and comply with the legal requirements.

■ During loading and unloading operations the corresponding accident prevention rules must
be observed.

■ Watch the load capacity of the hoists, load handling devices and means of transport as well
as the weight of the two-way valve.

■ Only hoists and load handling devices complying with the legal regulations must be used.
■ The transport of the two-way valve must be carried out in such a way as to exclude
damages.

CAUTION
Risk of being crushed!

The moveable internal flap is a potential risk of danger. The two-way valve must
only be operated when the pipes or machines are installed at the inlets or
outlets.

Danger of material damage through faulty installation and assembly!

The attached assembly drawing is relevant for installation and assembly.

The installation is carried out according to the project documents and the connection plans.

■ The assembly starts by defining the conveying direction according to the specifications in
the project.

■ Put the plant components in balance and in alignment, completely free of torsion.
■ The plant components must be assembled in such a way as to ensure a proper intake and
delivery of the conveyed material.

■ The two-way valve must be grounded by the customer or the conductive components must
be connected to the further pipe parts to avoid electrostatic charge.

Dangerous areas can result from adjacent machine parts and from connections. These areas
should be properly covered.
These covers are not included in the machine delivery.

4.3.2 Assembly of the Limit Stop Sensors

This chapter only applies to two-way valves with a motor drive.

Two-way valves with a motor drive must be equipped with limit stop sensors as to switch off the
motor when the flap has reached its end position.

CAUTION
Risk of being crushed!

Never reach into the two-way valve when adjusting the limit stop sensors as the
internal flap is in motion!

► Insert the limit stop sensors (Fig. 5/1) in the clamping angle (Fig. 5/4).

► Align the switching angle (Fig. 5/2) and the limit stop sensors in such a way that the internal
flap works properly.

► Connect the limit stop sensors by screws.

► Check the switching positions of the limit stop sensors after the electrical connection has
been finished. The yellow LED of the sensor must flash.

WARNING
Risk of injury through moveable parts/components!

■ Do not reach into the flap and slide openings during operation!
■ Do not remove any panels and covers during operation.

■ Before SOP the assembly, and operating staff must be instructed about the content of the
operating manual by the person responsible for the operational area. This activity should
also be formally documented.

■ The machine must only be operated with connected pipes.

■ Adjustments and any other work inside the two-way valve must only be performed during
shutdowns. The power supply to the machine must be switched off.

Checklist for the SOP:

► Check all further pipe parts for their connection before the installation.

► Check all connecting elements and screws. If necessary, re-tighten them.

► Check the two-way valve for its function.

5 Operation

The operation of the two-way valve must only be performed by trained staff.

WARNING
Risk of injury due to improper operation!

Improper operation can cause serious personal injury and material damages.

■ Before starting operations make sure that all panels and protective covers are
installed and work properly.
■ It is generally prohibited to reach in flap and slide openings during the
operation. The covers must not be removed during operations.

The flap of the two-way valve must only be switched if there is no product flow
and the two-way valve is empty.

The pneumatic or motor-driven two-way valve is directly operated through a switch or a central
control unit.
