Zara Ferreira, Director of Docomomo International

Zara Ferreira was born in Lisbon in 1988. She studied Architecture at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST-
UTL) where she graduated in November 2012. She developed a theoretical Master thesis entitled “The
Modern and the Climate in the Lusophone Africa. School buildings in Mozambique: the Fernando Mesquita
Concept (1955-1975)” (score: 19/20).

Since then she made her professional traineeship while researcher at ICIST (Institute of Structural
Engineering, Planning and Building of IST) (2013), through a research grant from FCT (Foundation for Science
and Technology) under the scope of the research project “EWV_Exchanging Worlds Visions: modern
architecture in Lusophone Africa (1943-1974) Brazilian experience looking through established since the
1930s". Since finished she has being collaborating with the architecture office Tetractys Arquitectos and with
Docomomo International. She is also currently working for the Portuguese Official Representation at the 14th
Biennale Archittetura.

Throughout her academic career, she developed some professional experience as trainee architect (2010),
as model maker (2010), as census taker (2011) and as jury of documentary cinema (2004). During that time
she also had an active participation in the Nucleus of Students of Architecture (2007-2010), organizing and
leading exhibitions and conference cycles. In 2012 she got the category of “Finalist” in the national
competition Secil Universities Award with an academic personal work.

As additional formation, she attended various courses and workshops: Nude drawing (2004-2006,
SNBA); Portuguese Literature - Moments of the Centuries XX/XXI (2006, FSCH, UNL); Video (2006 Ar.Co);
Spanish (2009); Archicad (2010, LTI-CIVMAT); Workshop on Digital Prefabrication (2011, ISTAR); III
Workshop IST/DAST/SCUT - Urban Regeneration and Sustainability (2011, Belmonte Palace). She also
did volunteer work at the institution Invalids of Commerce (2004/2005) and integrated two Theater Groups: Air
(2004-2006) and GTN (2010).
