Power can bring out people's true colors. If someone were to hit the lottery and act cocky or
greedy about it, someone who might be less fortunate or less lucky might not think of that person
the same or maybe even act jealous. In Hamlet's Novel, a new king comes to the throne after
Hamlet's father has been killed, but the new king isn't just anyone… it's Hamlet's uncle…
Claudius. Claudius prioritizes power over all else, by showing acts of selfishness, choosing
power over family, showing arrogance.Magnifying the person he seems to be behind the throne
Hamlet mourning the loss of his father, with no one else around to support him or care for
the loss of his father, thus making it seem as if just him were to actually care. “With mirth in
funeral and / with dirge in marriage”(1.2, 12-14) Claudius has come to the throne in Denmark, he
has also taken the queen, Hamlet's mother. Hamlet shows resentment over his fathers death,
growing angier, considering his fathers brother is now married to his mother. Claudius proceeds
to push Hamlet away from the death of his father “ How is it / that clouds still hang on you”(1.2,
68) Thus making Hamlet dislike Claudius even more, as he tries to make Hamlet feel as if the
Hamlet neglects any help or friendship from Claudius, He feels broken and resentful
against the world. “Why should we / in our peevish opposition take it too heart”(1.2, 104-105)
Claudius shows no grief towards King Hamlet's death, Making Hamlet rise in anger making him
feel hopeless and lifeless too. From being a child growing up too now trying to figure out why
Hamlet is also informed about the sighting of a spirit, who seems to appear as his father.
Hamlet feels as if his father may have returned to get revenge or to give answers . “Perchance / it
will walk again”(1.2, 263) Hamlet feels that he needs to speak with the spirit furthermore to
possibly gain answers about his fathers death and possibly put his mind at peace. “If it assumes
my noble fathers person / I'll speak to it”(1.2, 265-66) He knows he must speak to the spirit
because this isn't the way it was supposed to go. There must be more to the death of King
Hamlet.
Hamlet is unjustified with everything that has happened within such a short period of
time, with no support from Claudius, due to arrogance, he comes to his senses and realizes that
he needs to find out why Claudius acts the way he does with the throne.
