However, when something can be really determined by sight alone, the pattern should そうで
す not be used. Like –
~Looks like red (あかそうです。) is incorrect. Similarly, そう cannot be used with かわいい
(kawaii; cute), うつくしい (utsukushii; beautiful), and ハンサム (hansamu; handsome).
かわいい かわいそう…meaning changes (it means – you poor thing!)
Examples –
1. おねえさんは びじゅつを けんきゅうしそう です。
(My elder sister seems to do research on arts.)
2. あの カレーは からそう です。
(That curry looks spicy.)
3. この れんしゅうは たいせつそう です。
(This exercise seems important.)
4. この うわぎは あなたに よさそう です。
(This jacket looks good on you.)
5. かれは てがみを よまなさそう です。
(He doesn’t seem to read the letters.)
6. おかあさんが くすりやで くすりを かえさなさそう です。
(It seems that my mother is unable to return back the medicine to the pharmacy.)
7. がくせいは かんじが ぜんぜん わからなさそう です。
(Students seems not to understand the Kanji at all.)
~すぎる
すぎる or すぎます is used to indicate that the degree of an action or state is
excessive. It’s often not so good to do overdo something; すぎる is usually used in
reference to undesirable states. It is actually derived from the verb すぎる , which
means “to pass/ to exceed”. But when it is added to the end of the verb of adjective it
indicates that something has passed a desirable level and that’s too much!

(Today, employers enjoyed the Karaoke too much. )
3. その ビデオゲームが かんたんすぎる から、まいにち おとうとと あそびます。
(That videogame is too easy, so I play with my brother every day.)
4. きっさてんの なかに かがみが きたなさすぎる です。
(The mirror in the cafe is too dirty.)
5. ゆうべは べんきょうしすぎて、 つかれて はやくねました。
(Last night I studied so much that I get tired and sleep early.)
