NOTES ON SubFrame.xls

This Spreadsheet is intended to be used by qualified Civil and Structural Engineers who are
familiar with the provisions of IS:456-2000, and those who will evaluate the significance and
limitations of its contents and take responsibility for its use and application.

DISCLAIMER

No liability, including that for negligence, for any loss resulting from such usage or information
is accepted by the author of this Spreadsheet.

Notes for Input:

1. The idealization of whole frame by breaking it down to sub-frame is as per cl. 22.4.2 of IS:456-2000.
2. This idealization of sub-frame is applicable for gravity loads only, and not for lateral loads.
3. The analysis constitutes an explicit solution in terms of the rotation of the joints at the ends of beam
considered which depend on the relative stiffness of the members connected to each joint. The
analysis does not take into account the effects of deflections and axial deformations that may arise
which are generally negligible. The results obtained by this method give results which do not
differ significantly from those obtained from the analyses of the complete frame.
4. The stiffness of members are calculated on the basis of gross moment of inertia of members which are
T/L/Rectangular shaped section for beams, and Rectangular/Circular shaped section for columns.
The flange width of T and L shaped beam sections shall be calculated as per cl.23.1.2 of IS:456-2000.
Short-term static modulus of elasticity of concrete is considered as per cl. 6.2.3.1 of IS:456-2000.
5. To arrive at the maximum moments in the sub-frame, the arrangement of imposed load on the beams
considered: i) imposed load on two adjacent spans, ii) imposed load, only on the beam considered.
6. For the analysis, a total of 12 nos. each of dead and imposed loads (each of 7 no. types shown) can be
considered on each beam. In the end-bay frame, applied moment at beam end can also be considered.
7. For any case without inputs, all inputs for that case are to be left blank by using 'Delete' key.
