INTRODUCTION

Coco Coir doormats are made from the long, brown fibers of the coconut
husk. Thus, they are far safer for the environment than doormats made from
synthetics that are non-biodegradable and might even trigger allergic reactions
in those with sensitivities to these materials. The eco-friendly nature of coco
coir doormats makes them a great addition to other items found in green homes,
such as recycled water and solar electricity. Coir doormats, however, are sturdy
enough to also use in other settings, such as on farms or at industrial businesses.

While white coir fibers are used to make rope, brown coir fibers are
stronger and more commonly used for doormat production. The abundance of
coconuts makes processing coir fibers into yarn — among other products — a
sustainable system.

In terms of doormat construction, producers remove coconuts from their

trees, separate the coco coir fibers from the husk, and then spin them to create
coir yarn. After this initial processing, if a color other than the natural brown
shade is desired, the coir is bleached — in most cases, because of environmental
concerns, using hydrogen peroxide — and dyed to create an assortment of
colors used to produce an eco-friendly as well as a visually appealing household
accessory.

Eco-Friendly Coco Coir Doormats

Coco coir doormats are functional but also add a beautiful touch to a
doorway entrance. These naturally created doormats are strong enough to
withstand heavy foot traffic while allowing water to seep through the fibers,
which helps prevent them from rotting and molding under weathered
conditions.

1
The naturally bristled texture of coir doormats helps clean dirt and mud
from shoes efficiently. And these doormats are easy to clean without the need
for machine cleaning. Just scrape the mud away with a tool, such as a garden
hoe or metal spatula, or wait for it to dry and use a stiff brush to remove the
debris. Use water to wash away any remaining dirt particles, and then hang the
doormat to dry. Hang a dry but dirty coir doormat, and use a tool such as a
broom to knock the dust loose.

With a doormat thickness of at least 1 inch, there is no need for additional

non-environmentally friendly backing such as rubber or vinyl to hold the mat in
place. Vinyl- and rubber-free coir mats allow water to seep through and out into
the ground rather than holding it inside the fibers where it might cause mold or
disintegration problems.

Although coir doormats have a lifespan of up to 10 years, once they do

finally start to break down, you can add them to a compost pile rather than a
landfill, as you would doormats constructed using synthetic materials.

The natural long-lasting quality of coir doormats reduces the need for
doormat replacements, as in the case with synthetic doormats, due to faster
disintegration. They provide a natural look and feel to any home or building.

The History of Coir Processing

Throughout its history, coir has been hand-processed, first by climbing
the palms to gather the coconuts and collecting them from off the ground. Palm
climbers found that using a knife attached to a bamboo pole was most efficient,
allowing them to gather fruit from up to 250 trees each day.

In 1894, coir was more desirable than the fruit of the coconut. A large

percentage of coconuts were harvested before they were ripe enough to process

2
coir. The ideal time to collect coir was said to be 10 months, at which time
harvesters husked the coconuts and soaked them for one year to yield the coir,
as removing the coir from the shell requires soaking (known as retting).
Harvesters soaked coconut husks in either salt or fresh water, depending on
what was available. Soaking in salt water produced stronger coir.

Results varied, but once the coir was processed further by rolling the
fibers from between three to 10 nuts, depending on their size, the material was
said to produce about 1 pound of yarn.

Industrialization brought about mechanical processing in 1950 and, in

some areas, has led to modern-day husking machines that process about 200
coconuts per hour.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

A Plan of proposed study prepared by a researcher stating the research

activities to be performed in his proposed study before he undertaken his
research work is called a research design.

"A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collections and

analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research
purpose with economy in procedure".

Methods of Data Collection:

Data refer to the facts, figures or information collected for a specific
purpose.

There are two types of data namely:

1) Primary Data
2) Secondary Data

1) Primary Data:
 Primary Data are those which are new and original in nature.
 These data are the first hand information generated to achieve the purpose
of the research

Primary data can be collected 3 methods.

1) Observation method.
2) Experimentation method.
3) Survey method
The primary data for the report is through method with proper
questionnaire.

12
ii) Secondary Data:
Secondary data those data which are collected from the earlier research
work are in printed nature booklets statistically information etc.

The Secondary data for this survey is collected from internet, printed
booklets.

Sampling:
Sampling means where only a few units of population under study are
considered for analysis is called sampling.

a) Sample technique use:

Convenient sampling was used to collect the data.

b) Sample Size:
The Sample size taken for the survey is 70 respondents.

c) Sampling Techniques:
The sampling techniques used in the survey were the random sampling.

d) Field Method:
The survey was conducted in the Uthamapalayam town with reference to
mobile phone especially with Cocotuft Coir Mats.

Sampling Unit
I choose my sampling area at Uthamapalayam town for my market
survey.

13
DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

These are an attempt to organize and summarize data in order to increase

results, usefulness in such a manner that enables the researcher to relate critical
points with the study objectives. Sometimes these organizing and summarizing
of data require the use of summary statistically measures such as percentage
averages and dispersions. Since most marketing data are collected through the
use of sample, the reliability of the summary estimates is required to be
determined.

In this survey to collected data are analyses and interpreted by the

percentage analysis method.

a) Percentage analysis method

Percentage method to a special kind of ratio percentage is used in making
comparison between two or more series of data percentage are used to describe
relationship.
