ENACTUS
DESHBANDHU
Since its formation in 1952, Deshbandhu has not only
boasted of academic excellence, but has also laid keen
emphasis on the overall development of a student's
personality; for this purpose, the college provides
innumerable opportunities in the form of student societies
and organisations. Enactus Deshbandhu is an integral part
of this potpourri of activities that defines Deshbandhu
college.
Enactus Deshbandhu chapter was established in 2016 with
the efforts of students with a passion and enthusiasm to
bring about social change through entrepreneurial action.
We have successfully completed various projects
throughout this journey with a dedicated team and
immense hard work.
For us, at Enactus Deshbandhu, it’s not only about facilitating
our capabilities and knowledge to the people in need but
also learning from them the virtues of life - patience,
compassion, and hard work.
Our idea is to make paper from banana
fibre. Banana fibres and other plant fibres
canbe converted into pulp for paper
making. This offers a productive use of
waste fibres forcreating a local supply of
paper and generating income.
WHY WE CHOSE BANANA
FIBRES?
We decided to use banana fibre as Banana paper can
be 300 times stronger than the normal paper. The use
of the fibre can also solve a problem: disposal of the
plant's trunk.The plant bears fruit once in its lifetime;
after harvesting, most of its nothing more than waste.
Thus, it needs to be disposed of - a mammoth problem
in India, the largest producer of bananas
BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT

Using stem for paper making is recycling of agriculture waste and

reduction in pollution as less agriculture waste enter landfills and rivers.
Decreasing synthetic fibre production which is used to make traditional
paper.
Uses less energy, compared to traditional paper making
Natural and environment friendly paper as a product.
Requires low production cost.
Easily done by less skilled workers, no special training required.
Compared to traditional paper making, it uses inexpensive and easily
available machinery.
PROCESS OF MAKING PAPER
FROM BANANA STEM

The paper can be handmade or machinery assisted from banana stem

fibres. The process is very simple and eco friendly as it doesn't use any harsh
chemicals.
The banana stem is cut into smaller pieces , set aside to dry and cooked with
NaOH thoroughly to remove any natural resins. The cooked fibres are
washed and blended with water to make pulp.
After Straining pulp using a cloth , pulp is added to the mould and deckle in a
tub filled with water. Excess water is drained off, mold is removed from the
deckle. The deckle transfers the drained pulp on a felt material which is left to
dry. Lastly, the dried sheets are pressed.
REQUIREMENTS
Beneficiaries : Enactus works towards uplifting communities,
and our main aim is to do the same with the entrepreneurial
spirit. The majority of the proceeds will go to the beneficiaries.
These will be the people who will be working with us and
providing us with intermediary roles in the project to achieve
our main aim.
Work space : we need an active workspace with all the services
in the rightful condition to work on the project in the NGO itself.
Raw materials will be provided by us, and the NGO does not
need to pay us or anything extra for the project.
