Enactus JDMC was founded in November 2019 by Shreya Gupta
and Vedika Gaba and the team officially began its operations in
February 2020.

What is project
‘VRIDHI’- An endeavour to make basic sanitation facilities greener, affordable and accessible to all.

Project Vridhi is an entrepreneurial initiative to bring about progress and development in

the rural areas. True to its name, the main goal of the project is to boost the ongoing
development of toilets and sanitation facilities in the rural and marginalized areas.
Project Vridhi aims at introducing bio-toilets as a greener means of plastic management
and human waste management. Bio-toilet is a decomposition mechanized toilet system
which decomposes human excretory waste in the digester tank using specific high graded
bacteria (aerobic or anaerobic) further converting it into methane gas, carbon dioxide gas
and water.

It is an initiative to bring people from the rural and marginalised backgrounds a step closer
to the basic facilities of hygiene and sanitation.

We will introduce toilets and wash basins made out of recycled plastic which will play a
dual role in managing the excess plastic waste and also providing people with the basic
sanitation facilities at a much more accessible price.
WHY BIO-
TOILETS?
Hygiene in our country has been a substantial issue for quite
some time and needs to be taken care of, it is
estimated that 44% of people in rural areas still defecated in the o
pen
. The use of bio-toilets will work towards-

1. Ensuring better public health

2. Providing citizens with a better standard of living
3. Ensuring public sanitation
NECESSITY
1. On an average, Delhi generates 102.98kg/MT of PW daily. Total
MSW of the city stands at 6800MT/day. No post-treatment
operation of MSW is carried out and it is dumped as land filling.
This not only causes pollution but also generates a lot of plastic
waste which could be reutilised.
2. A compost fertilizer plant having a capacity of about 500MT was
established in the city, but currently the plant produces an output
of about only 200 MT resulting in inefficiency of resources.
3. Reducing these ever growing piles of plastic which act as a
source of various diseases and toxicity, is a major challenge as
they largely contribute to the deteriorating health conditions of
rag pickers and citizens.
ADVANTAGES OF BIO-TOILETS
● Traditional toilets use at least 10-15 liters of water in one flush, while
vacuum-based bio-toilets need just half a liter of water. It will help in
reducing the water wastage. Also, prevents contamination of water
resources by treating human waste and water.
Hygiene will now be under control, which supports “Swachh Bharat
Abhiyan” of the Government of India.
● Employment opportunities in rural India can be provided to villagers
(unprivileged people) in the construction of these toilets. Villagers are
trained to construct these toilets, which enable them to start building
other everyday items that can be sold in the villages.
● Waterless bio toilets with low-cost infrastructure can help alleviate
sanitation and hygiene issues. It requires minimum energy as well.
● Further treatment can turn the waste into fertilizer which can be used for
soil and agriculture. It is a perfect alternative to the dumping of waste
in the ground, especially in rural areas.
● Controls bad odour problems if effective microbial treatment products
are utilized for degradation.
● This method will also support the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” of the
Government of India.
 AREAS
AREAS OFOF IMPACT
IMPACT
● This project is developed keeping in mind the existing SDG of
clean water and sanitation of the UN. The project will help in the
following ways :

1. Create a better and healthy environment in slums.

2. Decrease the transmission of diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea .

3. It will help in both, socio and economic development.

4. Will help overcoming the consequences of inadequate toilets faced by

women (sexual assaults and lost educational opportunities) .

 PLAN OF ACTION
1. SPACE REQUIRED:
Initially, we will target 50 households which lack basic toilet facilities in the first phase
and then increase it to 150 households subsequently.
2. EQUIPMENTS NEEDED:
Hammer mills, granulators, chippers, grinders, shear shredders, all-purpose shredder,
plastic melting tools and plumbing material.
3. SUPPLIES THAT WE WILL BE PROVIDING:
We will be providing the final and finished bio toilet with an inbuilt system of
decomposing human excretory waste.
4. PRODUCTION OF THE TOILETS AND WASH BASINS:
The manufacturing of the commodities will be outsourced i.e. the people with skills in
plastic melting and reformation will be employed to construct the products.
HOW WILL THE HYGIENE BE
MAINTAINED

-Single use gloves will be made available to all along with sanitizers.
-A routine sanitisation process will be followed .
-Limited number of staff members will be allowed at a time and all the
members will be divided in small groups.
-A detailed conversation over the importance of hygiene and method of
using the toilet will be conducted .
HOW DO WE GET THE WORD
OUT:
Marketing and promotions of this new initiative will be done
through the intensive use of digital marketing and awareness
campaigns. We will make use of the various social media
platforms to spread the word about the use of sustainable bio-
toilets.
Funds will be raised through collaboration with a startup / ngo.
We will also look into private funds and fundraising
programmes.
 TARGET COMMUNITY:

For the first two years of execution, the project is primarily aimed at 50 households
in the economically marginalised regions in and around the state of Delhi which will
eventually expand to 150 households in the upcoming year after detailed analysis of
the feedback and statistics derived after the implementation of the project. Hence,
solving two major issues of plastic waste management and sanitation.
