Three Types of Authority
● Traditional authority is power that is
rooted in traditional, or long-standing,
beliefs and practices of a society. It exists
and is assigned to particular individuals
because of that society’s customs and
traditions.
● Rational-legal authority derives from
law and is based on a belief in the
legitimacy of a society’s laws and rules
and in the right of leaders to act under
these rules to make decisions and set
policy.
● Charismatic authority stems from an
individual’s extraordinary personal
qualities and from that individual’s hold
over followers because of these qualities.
Such charismatic individuals may
exercise authority over a whole society or

only a specific group within a larger

society.

Four Biblical Authority

1. Family (Husband-Wife-Children)
- God has entrusted the leadership
to the husband where the wife and
children are to submit to the
leadership. Parents are
responsible to train their children,
and children are to honor and
obey their parents. (See Ephesians
5:21–6:4 and Proverbs 6:20–21.)

2. Government: National leaders—Local

officials—Citizens
- In Scripture we are instructed to
respect and obey government
authorities and ordinances and to
live honorably within our
communities. National leaders
and local officials are to punish
evildoers and honor those who do
well. (See I Peter 2:13–17 and
Romans 13:1–5.)

3. Church: Church leaders—Church

members
- Within the church, the leadership
of pastors, elders, and teachers is
essential for the health of the
Body of Christ. Believers are to
honor and respect leaders and to
submit to one another and walk in
humility. (See Ephesians 4:11–16,
Hebrews 13:17, and I Peter
5:1–11.)

4. Business: Employers—Employees
HOLY CHILD CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.
Plaza Amado V. Hernandez, Tondo, Manila
SCHOOL YEAR 2021 - 2022
CHRISTIAN LIVING EDUCATION GRADE 10

- Employers are challenged to act

with equity and care as they
oversee employees, patterning
their behavior after God Himself,
Who is their authority. Employees
are responsible to serve well,
doing their work wholeheartedly
as unto the Lord. (See Colossians
3:22–4:1 and I Peter 2:18.)

Definition of Stewardship
Stewardship - “Utilizing and managing all
resources God provides for the glory of God and
the betterment of His creation.” - Charles Bugg
(a pastor and former professor of preaching, is a
preaching coach at the Center for Healthy
Churches)

God created Earth for mankind and we are now

stewards of His creation. This means it is our
responsibility to look after and take care of this
world. We should accept this responsibility and
appreciate God's gift of creation for being our
home. Our stewardship of creation involves the
caretaking of the environment and animals as
well as our families and communities.

Four Principles of Biblical Stewardship

1. The principle of ownership - is the key
biblical stewardship. God owns
everything, we are simply managers or
administrators acting for his sake.
Stewardship is the commitment of one’s
self and possessions to God’s service,
recognizing that we do not have the right
of control over our property or ourselves.
2. The principle of responsibility - We are
called as God’s stewards to manage that
HOLY CHILD CATHOLIC SCHOOL, INC.
Plaza Amado V. Hernandez, Tondo, Manila
SCHOOL YEAR 2021 - 2022
CHRISTIAN LIVING EDUCATION GRADE 10

which belongs to God. We are

responsible to manage his holdings well
and according to his desires and
purposes.
3. The principle of accountability - We
are all stewards of the resources, abilities
and opportunities that God has entrusted
to our care. Thus, He entrusted us with
authority in accord with the principles he
has established over the creation and we
are not allowed to rule over it.
4. The principle of reward - Whatever you
do, work at it with all your heart, as
working for the Lord, not for men, since
you know that you will receive an
inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It
is the Lord Christ you are serving.
(Colossians 3:23-24)

● Issues that abuse the Use of Authority, Integration
Power, and Stewardship
● What values should a person in authority CANVA
embody?
● How can we remain Stewards of Human
Life?

Issues that abuse the Use of Authority, Power

and Stewardship
1. Corruption - is the misuse of public
power (by elected politicians or
appointed civil servants) for private gain.
2. Collusion (Pakikipagsabwatan) - an
anticompetitive business practice where
firms work together to engage in illegal
acts of market manipulation that earn
them greater profits at the expense of the
consumer.
3. Bribery (Panunuhol) - the offer or
acceptance of anything of value in
exchange for influence on a government
official or employee.
4. Nepotism - is a form of favoritism shown
to acquaintances and family members. It
is the act of abusing one’s power or
official position to offer a job or a favor
to a family member while disregarding
their merit and qualification.

What values should a person in authority

embody?

1. Integrity - strict adherence to moral

values and principles. “Doing the right
thing, even when no one is looking.”
(C.S. Lewis)
2. Accountability - obligation or
willingness to accept responsibility
3. Fairness - consistent with rules, logic, or
ethics

4. Respect - polite attitude shown toward

someone or something that you consider
important
5. Altruism - unselfish concern for the
welfare of others

How can we remain Stewards of Human Life?

We can remain stewards of human life by

developing the virtue of love and receiving
God’s grace.

To remain stewards of life, we have to develop

love as virtue – a good habit. Stewardship is
not just an act done when the situation calls for
it. It has to be a value lived every day. We need
His loving presence to enlighten us of the truth
about ourselves, purpose and destiny. We need
His grace to keep us aware of the value of
human life and our obligation as stewards.

Instructions: The students will read and analyze
the situation given. Then, they will write the
appropriate action/way on how a person in
authority should act.

Situation:
Leo is a project manager of their local
government. He filed a project proposal about
Application constructing a bridge in a remote place in their
community along with the budget required. The
main purpose of the project was for easy
transportation of people from remote place to the
town and it was approved. He then contacted a
company whose manager is a relative of his and
had an agreement regarding the equipment and
materials to be used for the project.
They used cheap materials for the project and
they claimed the rest of the money for their
personal interest. As a result, the bridge was
unstable, resulting in a fatal accident.
