Following a report, by the United Kingdom Health

Security Agency (UKHSA) that a person in England had

been diagnosed with Monkeypox, the Nigeria Centre for
Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed circulation of
the disease with 558 cases and eight deaths in 32 states of
the federation. The UKHSA said the patient had recently
travelled from Nigeria. It said the person is receiving
care at the Infectious Disease Unit of Guy’s and St.
Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.

According to guardian newspaper, 241 (43.2 per cent) have been confirmed in 22 states – Rivers (52), Bayelsa
(43), Lagos (33), Delta (31), Cross River (16), Edo (10), Imo (nine), Akwa Ibom (seven), Oyo (six), FCT
(eight), Enugu (four), Abia (three), Plateau (three), Adamawa (three), Nasarawa (two), Benue (two), Anambra
(two), Ekiti (two), Kano (two), Ebonyi (one), Niger (one) and Ogun (one).

The NCDC said eight deaths have been recorded with Case Fatality Ratio (CFR) of 3.3 per cent in six states –
namely Edo (two), Lagos (two), Imo (one), Cross River (one), FCT (one) and Rivers (one) – from September
2017 to April 30, 2022.

There’s currently no proven, safe treatment available for monkeypox. Monkeypox normally takes about two to
four weeks to run its course. If you are exposed to monkeypox, your provider will monitor you for 21 days.
Early symptoms are flu-like and include fever, chills and body aches.

We can prevent monkeypox virus by?

 Avoid eating monkey meat

 Cooking all animal products thoroughly
 Avoid body contact with an infected person
 Say no to unnecessary touching like handshakes
 Maintain very high index of suspicion
 Report to the hospital if you observe strange feeling
 Wash your hands regularly
 During slaughtering of animal, avoid contact with the animal’s fluid
 Avoid food items like monkey meat, particularly if not properly cooked

Monkeypox is milder than smallpox, but it’s still important to be seen by a healthcare provider if you develop
any symptoms.

WORLD IMMUNIZATION WEEK 2022 – Long Life for All April 22nd-30th,
2022
A Long Life for All is not a promise, it's an ambition,

because everyone deserves a chance at a fulfilling life,

that is free to pursue happiness, and look back without

wondering "What if?".

Vaccines have been indiscriminately saving lives since

1796. The first Smallpox immunization was a fight back

against disease. Vaccines provide opportunity and hope

for all of us to enjoy a more fulfilling life.

And that's something we should all be fighting for

Vaccines, in the pursuit of a long life well lived

According to Tosin Mathew-Akinsiku (nurse/midwife), Immunization is of great importance to us and our children.
Administering vaccines stimulate our body’s own immune system to protect us against subsequent infections or disease.

Some of the important vaccines for a child include;

All three hepatitis B vaccinations, diphtheria vaccine, tetanus vaccine, acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine, Haemophilus
influenzae type b vaccine (Hib), pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), measles,
mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.”

Immunization positively affects the growth and development of a child. Getting infected with diseases, especially at a very
young age, could have adverse effect on a child’s growth and physiological development.

Immunization is one effective way to check these diseases and ensure that a child grows according to plan. In a
quantifiable percentage, it does attribute to the growth. Although it can’t be physically measured but it can be said that
healthy children are more able to participate in education and other life learning activities, which help prepare them to
become healthy and productive adults.”

We all have a duty to highlight the collective action needed and to promote the use of vaccines to protect
people of all ages against disease.
HOW YOU CAN TAKE ACTION
 Join World Sleep Day as a delegate or supporter.
 Obtain more information at www.worldsleepday.org.
 Be cognizant that most sleep problems can be managed by changing behaviors around sleep, medical therapy, or
cognitive behavioral therapy.
 Be aware that patients suffering from sleep complaints, or who suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, should see
a physician and, if needed, obtain a consultation in a sleep center.

How can exercise impact your sleep?

Physical exercise is considered an effective, non-pharmacological approach to improve sleep. A recent systematic review and meta-
analysis suggested that adolescents with higher subjective and objective physical activity are more likely to experience good sleep
subjectively and objectively. Likewise, among adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea, physical exercise as the sole intervention was
associated with improved sleep outcomes. The National Sleep Foundation has amended its sleep recommendations for good sleepers to
encourage exercise without any caveat as to time of day as long as this is not at the expense of sleep duration.

Insomnia treatment such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) alone or in conjunction with sleeping pills if insomnia is the main cause.
There are secondary causes such as medications, a medical disorder or a sleep disorder (for example, Restless Legs Syndrome) that may
need other treatments. For primary insomnia, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) must be part of the treatment with or without
medications and a good sleep hygiene. If the patient has a psychiatric disorder, it must be addressed concomitantly.
