1ST QUESTION:
- Maria Josefa Gabriela, also known as Gabriela Silang, was born on March
19, 1731 in Caniogan, Santa, Ilocos Sur. Gabriela met Diego Silang, a man
of great intelligence, courage and determination who believed and fought
towards the independence of the Filipino people. She joined the revolt
against the Spaniards alongside Diego, after Diego was assassinated,
Gabriela vowed to avenge his death, and to continue the struggle. Gabriela
did something very heroic and took her husband’s place as the leader of the
rebellion. She greatly armed herself and informed the people that the
struggle was far from over and she soon gained more followers.
2ND QUESTION:
- I feel the braveheart of Gabriela and she earned a title of “Henerala” which
meant “woman general” and possessed the fighting spirit and determination
of her husband.
3rd QUESTION:
- Maria Josefa Gabriela's story is one that dismantles the idea that women are
only victims of war. She rose to become the very first female leader of the
Philippine revolution.
4TH QUESTION:
- It is significant because Gabriela Silang vowed to avenge his husband’s
death, and her time of leadership had been short, but her martyrdom and
courage brought a lasting example to women of the Philippines. I feel it is
significant because of her “legacy” that she became the first female leader of
the Philippine Revolution.

- Silang was a fearless Ilocaña warrior who assumed her husband’s role as
commander of rebel troops after his assassination in 1763. Since their
achievements are usually written about together, many forget that she had
her own fair share of heroic acts as “the first Filipina to lead an uprising
against a foreign power.”

2ND QUESTION:
- Her undaunted determination, along with her skill and strength is what the
people of the Philippines will never forget, and why she is regarded as the
pioneering female "Bayani" (hero).
3RD QUESTION:
- Thus, this woman warrior passed away, her final resting place remaining
- a mystery to this day. Her courageous leadership became a symbol for the
importance of women in Filipino society, and their struggle for liberation
during colonization.
4TH QUESTION:
- Her ferocity and death became a symbol for Filipino women. Gabriela
Silang is a rare gem in Philippine history, she should be an inspiration to all
Filipino women, she should be emulated by young girls and her true story of
courage told from all over the country, and she should be studied in schools
and given as much attention as her husband and other male Filipino heroes.
