CASE STUDY
Attempt the case study:

Consider, as you are working as a Press Tool Design Engineer in an automobile

company, where all the cutting (e.g.: Piercing, Blanking, Trimming, etc.) and forming
operations were performed.
So, department is assigning you one task, i.e., to design and develop a flywheel (of
suitable size) for a punching press, who is required to punch 20 mm diameter holes in
15 mm thick plate having ultimate shear strength of 320 N/mm 2. Condition given is, the
machine has to pierce 30 holes per minute and punching operation requires 1/10 th
(One-tenth) of second. Rotational speed is (as per your batch given below) and flywheel
diameter (Mean Diameter) is 3.2 m.
Roll no Rotational
Batch
From To Speed
Batch 1 101 110 150 rpm
Batch 2 111 120 180 rpm
Batch 3 121 130 210 rpm
Batch 4 131 140 240 rpm
Batch 5 141 150 270 rpm
Batch 6 151 160 300 rpm
Batch 7 161 170 330 rpm
Batch 8 171 183 360 rpm

Instructions:
- Student has to solve the problem with proper explanation.
- You have to add your roll number in ultimate shear strength value and solve the
problem eg, if your roll number is B-101, then take ultimate shear strength value
as 320+101=421 N/mm2and solve.
- Prepare pdf of the same for presentation. (pdf name Roll No_Name e.g.,
101_Chetna Mahant)
- Also draw a schematic diagram of flywheel.
- Mention your comments/observations on the last page.
- Write your name, class roll & enrolment no. on top of every page/slide.

Reference:
- Use design data book by B.D.Shiwalkar for design purpose
