TRUE OR FALSE

Direction: Answer the following. Put your answer before the number.

False 11. All Stainless Steels are non-magnetic because they contain chromium.

False 12. Alloy Steels are steels that have a mixture of elements added to normal iron.

True 13. Carbon Steel can come in both hot and cold rolled finishes.

True 14. Cold rolled steel can be identified by its smooth and shiny surface.

True 15. Machine-tool operations, cutting fluids or coolants are not used to modify the harmful effects
of friction and high temperatures.

Direction: Answer the following. Put your answers in the space provided for
you after the item.

1. Why is safety important in a machine shop?

- A machine shop is a hazardous place containing welding equipment, cutting tools and various
machine capable of causing serious injuries, burns, blindness, disfigurement. A safe and healthy
workplace not only protects worker from injury and illness, it can also lower injury and illness and also
reduce absenteeism.

2. How do we stay safe with machines?

- Machine guards are available in different types. These are device that helps to protect the machinery
operators from accidents. Machine guards prevent sparks and other debris flying out from the
equipment. The barriers also protect a worker from coming in contact with sharp edges, cutting tools or
moving parts.
3. List the steps involved in laying out.

. Planning before beginning any layout is one of the most important steps.

. Study the shop drawing or blueprint carefully before you cut off the stock.

. Remove all oil ang grease from the work surface and apply layout dye.

. Locate and sribe a reference or base.

. Using the base line as a reference line, locate and scribe all center lines for each circle, raduis or arc.

. Mark the points where the center lines intersect using a sharp prick punch.

. Scribe all the circle, radii, and arc using the divider or trammel.

. Using the correct type of protractor, locate and scribe all straight and angular lines.

. Scribe all lines for internal openings.

. Alllayout lines should be clean, sharp , and fine. Reapply layout dye to all messy , wide, or inccorresct
lines and rescribe.

4. Explain shop safety practices relating to eye protection and tool handling.

- Relating to eye protection everyone must be wear safety glasses for the sake of your eye. Use proper
gloves when you handle stock with sharp edges and hand- cut sharp items. Don't wear gloves when you
are operating machinery. While you operate machines, wear close - fitting clothing, tie back long hair,
and remove your jewelry.

5. Describe the tools commonly used for layout work in the machine shop.

- Scriber is the layout tool that is used to produce these line. When laying out circles, arcs, and radii, it
is the best to use the divider. When scribing circles, arcs, and radii that are too large to be produced
with the divider, a trammel should be used. Hermaphrodite caliper is a tool used to lay out lines that
parallel with the edges of the workpiece. Surface gage is used for many purposes, but is most often used
for layout work. Surface plate provides a true, smooth, plane surface. Verneir height gage is a caliper
with a special foot block to adapt it for use on a surface plate. Bevel protractor consist of an adjustable
blade with a graduated dial.
