Q1.Classify ZnOE according to ADA specification.(
Shamabhat pg.144).
A. Classification:
•type one – temporary cementation.
•type two – permanent cementation.
•type three – temporary restoration.
•type four – cavity liners.

Q2. What modification have been done in ZnOE

to improve it’s strength?( Shamabhat pg. 147)
A. In resin modified cement Natural or synthetic
resin have been added and in EBA fused alumina
and ortho epoxy benzoic acid have been added.

Q3. What are the advantages of ZnOE?(

Shamabhat pg. 147)
A. Advantages:
•have obtundant effect on pulp.
•reduces post operative sensitivity.
•has bacteriostatic property.
•non acidic in nature hence can be easily placed
at the base of cavity.
Q4. What are the disadvantage of ZnOE?(
Shamabhat pg. 147)
A. Disadvantage:
•cytotoxic
•soft tissue irritant.

Q5. Factors that decrease setting time.(shamabhat

pg. 145)
A. •sintering of powder at 300°C for some time
•smaller particle size
•moisture

Q6. Factors that increase setting time.(

Shamabhat pg. 145)
A. •larger particle size
•retarders like glycol or glycerine
•lower temperature

Q7 . What are the factors on which the retention

of ZnOE depends.(shamabhat pg. 146)
A. •strenght of cement
•stress imposed on restoration
•consistency and film thickness
•particle size.

Q8. What are the recent modifications .

(Shamabhat pg. 147)
A. Non-eugenol cements
•zinc oxide eugenol endodontic sealer

Q9. What is the setting time of ZnOE ?(shamabhat

pg. 146)
A. •conventional ZnOE - 4-10min.
•resin modified - 9min.
•EBA alumina – 6-10 min.

Q10. What are the uses of ZnOE?(shamabhat pg.

147)
A. •bases
•endodontic sealers
•temporary cementation
•periodontal dressing

Q11. Why is water important?(shamabhat pg. 146)

A. Water hydrolyses the zinc oxide to form zinc
hydroxide . Zinc hydroxide further reacts with
eugenol.

Q12. What is the composition of ZnOE.(

Shamabhat pg.144)
A. Ingredients. Weight%. Function
Powder
1 zinc oxide. 69%. Reactive
Ingredient
2 white rosin. 29.3%. Reduces
The brittleness
3 Zn stearate. 1%. Plasticizer

4 Zn acetate, 0.7%. Accelerator

CaCl2

Liquid:
1 eugenol. 85%. Reactor

2 olive oil. 15%. Plasticizer

Q13. What are the properties of ZnOE(
shamabhat pg. 144, 145)
A. 1 biological – it has obtundant effect on pulp.
Used are capping agent . Reduces postoperative
sensitivity.

2 rheological property- it does not changes its

viscosity quickly during its placement into the
prepared cavity .

3 mixing and setting time- mixing : 1- 1.5 min.

Setting time – 4-10 min.

4 solubility- 0.04%

5 thermal properties- very low thermal

properties 0.0004 cal/sec /cm2/cm.

6 retention- do not adhere to the tooth structure

chemically and retention in by physical means.

7 dimensional stability- negligible volumetric

shrinkage of about 2.5%.
