In the simplest term, claims are the pieces of

evidence that writers and speakers used to
prove their point

Let’s see this example given.

Instagram is owned by Facebook.

The sentence became a claim because this

seeks for details and explanations meaning
this let us think and argue.

Can you give an example? Sir!

Yes, Cristel! Tawa-tawa is the cure for Covid-19.

( the teacher will explain the characteristics 2. A claim should be specific and focus.
of a good claim) 3. A claim should be interesting and
engaging.

dangerous to one’s health”may I ask
anyone if this statement is a good claim?
Why? Sir!

Yes, Renalyn? Sir, I think the statement is not good claim,

yet it is specific, interesting topic and even
logical but it’s not debatable.

Why class? Sir!

Yes, Dave! Sir, because smoking is already proven to be

this in persuasive and argumentative writing.

D. Discussion

When we say claim, it has its types. Let’s

start!

Actually, there are three types of claims.

These are also called propositions of Fact,
Value and Policy in your Text.

First, Claim of Fact

Kindly read? Sir!

Yes, Dave! A claim of fact makes an assertion about

something that can be proved or disproved
with factual evidence So a claim of fact for a
logical argument cannot simply consist of a
statistic or proven fact. It needs, instead, to
focus on an assertion which uses facts to
back it up, but for which the evidence might
still be debatable

Claim of fact- the statements that report,

describe, predict or make casual claims.
However, keep in mind the basic quality of
claims that they have to be debatable, and
offer an assertion about an issue.

Can you give an example? Sir!

Yes, Jennycris! Converting to solar energy can save

homeowners money.

Teens who engage in promiscuous,

unprotected sex will develop STDs, become

A claim of value argues that something is
good or bad, or that one thing is better than
another thing.

Who can give examples? Sir!

Yes, Melissa! Safety is more important than freedom.

It’s better to apply good nutritional choices at

home than teach them at school, because
good nutrition then becomes ingrained in the
child’s experience.

Awesome answers!

Lastly, Claim of Policy… please read? Sir!

Yes, Jamaica! Claim of Policy- argues that something

should or should not be done, believed,
banned; argues for a course of action.
In other words, A claim of policy argues that
certain conditions should exist, or that
something should or should not be done, in
order to solve a problem.

Kindly, give an example? Sir!

Yes, Jobel! The death penalty should be abolished
because it does nothing to prevent murder.
