If the object of the preposition is singular, use a singular verb. If the object of the preposition is
plural, use a plural verb.
Example 1:
Half of the dresses are dirty: half (subject) and of the dresses (prepositional phrase). The countable
noun dresses requires a plural verb.
Example2:
Half of the sugar is gone: half (subject) but the non-countable noun (sugar) requires a singular verb.
Two-thirds of the work is complete VS two-thirds of the workers are angry…
When the subject is a sum of money or a period of time, a singular verb is used.

Several: a few (plusieurs);
Plenty: a lot, a large amount (beaucoup, plus qu’assez, assez) There’s plenty of gas in the car.
Many: a large number of sth (beaucoup de, de nombreux…) Many have tried to climb the mountain and failed.
Fifteen dollars is a high price to pay for entering the movies.
Five years is the maximum sentence for that offense.
