Abstract—In this article, a compact ultra-wideband monopole

antenna with dual band-notched characteristic is proposed, in which
the C-shaped slot creates one band-notch at 3.5 GHz, and the pair
of inverted-L-shaped slots produce another band-notch at 5.8 GHz.
Simulated and measured results show that the operating frequency
band (VSWR < 2) of the proposed antenna is from 2.7 to 11.5 GHz,
with the dual bands of 3.3–3.7 GHz and 5.5–6.4 GHz notched. By
changing the lengths of the C-shaped slot and the pair of inverted-
L-shaped slots, the central frequencies of the dual notched bands can
be adjusted easily.

1. INTRODUCTION

In recent years, with the development of ultra-wideband wireless com-

munication technologies, the ultra-wideband systems have attracted
much attention. Although ultra-wideband systems have many advan-
tages such as small size, high speed data rate, and low power con-
sumption, it still requires a small size antenna with band-notched
characteristics to avoid interfering with nearby communication systems
such as WIMAX systems (3.3–3.7 GHz) and WLAN systems (5.725–
5.825 GHz). Thus, a good antenna for UWB applications should have
dual-notched bands in 3.3–3.7 GHz and 5.725–5.825 GHz to prevent
the interference. However, most of the articles about UWB antennas
mainly discuss one notched frequency in WLAN band [1–8]. In [9–
12], four types of ultra-wideband antennas with dual band-notched are
proposed. Their dual band-notched characteristics are formed by dif-
ferent methods. But they have the same problem that it is difficult to
separately adjust the central frequencies of the two notched bands.

Based on the researches above, this paper proposes a compact

monopole ultra-wideband antenna with dual band-notched character-
istics in 3.5 GHz (3.3–3.7 GHz) and 5.8 GHz (5.5–6.4 GHz). By using
a C-shaped slot and a pair of inverted-L-shaped slots, dual band stops
will be created. By only changing the lengths of the C-shaped slot and
the pair of inverted-L-shaped slots, we can alter the central frequencies
of the dual notched bands easily and separately. Details of the antenna
design will be presented, and the measured results of voltage standing
wave ratio (VSWR), radiation pattern and gain will be given later.

2. ANTENNA DESIGN
Downloaded by [Anadolu University] at 07:28 27 December 2014

Figure 1 shows the geometry and configuration of the proposed ultra-

wideband antenna with dual band-notched characteristic. The antenna
is printed on the FR-4 substrate with a thickness of 1 mm and dielectric
constant of 4.4. This antenna has a size of 36 × 40 mm2 and is fed
by a 50 Ω microstrip line. The proposed antenna consists of dual
concentric cirque and a rectangle strip which is used to connect the dual
concentric cirque. Also, a C-shaped slot is etched on the outside cirque,
which leads band-notched characteristic at 3.5 GHz. In addition, a pair
of inverted-L-shaped slots is symmetrically embedded in the ground,
which obtains another band-notched characteristic at 5.8 GHz. The
design concept of the notch function is to adjust the length of the
embedded slot to be about half-wavelength at the desired notched
frequency making the input impedance singular. The optimized
antenna parameters are listed in Table 1. Also, the photograph of
manufactured antenna is shown in Figure 2.

3. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

The proposed dual band-notched UWB antenna is simulated using

HFSS and measured with a WILTRON37269A network analyzer after
fabrication. Figure 3 shows the measured and simulated VSWRs for
the proposed antenna with slots and the measured VSWR for the
reference UWB antenna without slots. It is obvious that the measured
result is in good agreement with the simulated one. According to
the measured result, it is apparent that the UWB antenna can cover

the frequency band of 2.7–11.5 GHz for VSWR < 2 and exhibits two
notched bands of 3.3–3.7 GHz and 5.5–6.4 GHz. As shown in Figures 4
and 5, one can conclude that the central frequencies of the dual notched
bands are controlled by choosing the lengths of the C-shaped slot and
the pair of inverted-L-shaped slots, and the variations of one band-
notched central frequency have only a little influence on the other.

The far-field radiation characteristics of the proposed antenna

are also studied. Figure 6 shows the measured radiation patterns of
the prototype antenna at sampling frequencies of 3, 5, and 9 GHz,

respectively. It is observed that the radiation patterns are nearly omni-

directional characteristics in H plane and a typical dipole-like pattern
in E plane. But at 9 GHz, the copularized components of the radiation
pattern are distorted. Also, the measured gain of the proposed antenna
from 3 to 11 GHz is given in Figure 7. The gain is relatively steady in a
range of approximately 2 dB ∼ 5 dB in the UWB operating bandwidth,
and two desired sharp gains decrease in the vicinity of 3.5 and 5.8 GHz.

4. CONCLUSION

A compact monopole ultra-wideband antenna with dual band-notched

characteristic is proposed in this paper. Dual frequency band notches
are realized by inserting a C-shaped slot in the radiating element as
well as a pair of inverted-L-shaped slots in the ground. By changing
their lengths, the central frequencies of the dual notched bands are
controlled. The experimental results show that the operating frequency
band (VSWR < 2) of the proposed antenna is from 2.7 to 11.5 GHz,
while avoiding EM interference with the WIMAX band (3.3–3.7 GHz)
and WLAN band (5.725–5.825 GHz). Moreover, the proposed antenna
has good radiation characteristics on the operating frequency.
