PRELIMINARY REVIEW

Review Contract Plans & Proposal, Specs. and DOT approved Shop Drawings (Sections 603 &
604). All Shop drawings should be submitted with calculations by the contractor for approval by
Regional and MO Materials.
Ensure that the shop drawings are approved by the Regional Design,Geotechnical, and
Materials groups prior to sending it to MO materials and Geotechnical group.
Review Standard Sheets for installation details (203-4, 203-5, 603-1R1, 604-5R1, etc.).
Make sure all utility mark-outs have been completed and proper Dig Safe calls have been made
prior to allowing any excavations.
Review plans for conflicts with existing utilities and make sure any test holes have been done to
determine vertical and horizontal conflicts.
Review Drainage sheets/tables to determine correct locations to achieve proper curb offset or
pavement/shoulder width.
Review contractors Lifting Plan. (Do not require a PE certified Lifting Plan unless it is required
as per plans)

MATERIALS

Review Material Specifications for Culvert Items (Sections 207,501,701, 703).


Make sure the Culvert is manufactured in a DOT approved facility.
Verify delivered Culvert pieces matches approved shop drawings and within tolerances.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS -

Follow requirements for Trench, Culvert and Structure Excavation (206-3.01).


Trenches greater than 5' in depth require an approved excavation protection system (Section
552).
Make sure contractor excavates within pay limits as shown in Contract drawings. Note any
areas requiring undercut due to rock or unsatisfactory existing materials.
Verify the inlet and outlet elevations the Contract drawings.
Bedding and backfill follows requirements of Section 203-3.15 and Standard Sheets (603-3.03).
Check table for proper backfill material.
If winter work, verify work in accordance with approved Winter Earthwork Submittal
Installation of culvert pieces as per approved lift plan. Ensure that Crane operators license is
Valid if installation is made by a Crane.
Backfill around culvert following Compaction requirements (203-3.15).
Backfill in 6" layers max. with equal depths on each side of pipe (203-3.15).
Waterproof the culvert joints and top as shown in the Contract Drawings.
