The brief overview of the Newsprinters

Newsprinters is a newspaper manufacturing company which is part of a larger

multinational company in the UK and it has about 20 to 30 years’ experience
and has a good name in the industry. Nowadays, they have 60%-70% hold of
the printing of the national titles in the shops. Its previous operation mode is
printing newspaper and getting income from advertisements, but the actual
sales of newspaper titles has steadily decreased between 5% to 8% due to the
shrinking industry. They have brand new production sites which cover the
breadth of the country and recently invested many new equipment. With this
new equipment, they can print faster and print better products than other
competitors. The company have a big aim about the future, want to be the last
company in this business.

The relevant drivers of change Commented [AC3]: This section needs improving. Use
SWOT and PESTLE or McKinsey 7s

With Burke-Litwin Model of Organisational Change and Performance diagram, Commented [AC4]: Define Drivers of Change
it can easily figure out the relationship between different drivers of change (CMI).
They interact with each other and cannot be changed individually. The
relationship between was showed in figure 1. In this paper, it focuses on
external and a part of internal environment which are strategy, leadership,
company culture and organisational.
Commented [AC5]: No need for the pictures

Strategic Needs Commented [AC6]: This is confused. What strategy

model are you using?

The PESTLE analysis can help company to aware the threats and anticipate
future difficulties in the future (CMI). From the interview, Steve said in the past
decade, advertising revenues have shrunk because of advances in technology.
In table 1 it can show that the biggest threat is not only coming from the impact
of the rapid development of mobile device technology but also the effect of the
virus on people's travel, higher reading and manufacturing costs and the thirst
of the young for the latest news.
On the other hand, the environmental protection laws and the recession will
also have an impact on manufacturing costs and sales.
However, it still has several opportunities. As Steve said, Newsprinter company
has new product sets and very latest printing equipment. It’s company’s
opportunities which can make the company more competitive in the future. So,
the company should try to maintain this advantage.
Britain has a long-standing habit of reading in print, and the experience of
reading in print is far superior to that of reading in electronic form, and Britain
is increasingly ageing, with older people far less receptive to new technology
than younger ones. Ageing is another reason why company need to consolidate
the ageing market, because nearly 12 million (11,989,322) people aged 65 in
2018 and the number still keep increasing (Age UK 2019). But the company's
lack of innovation is likely to cause it to miss this opportunity.
Britain's Internet coverage is still patchy, and newspapers are still the best
medium to read on trains. On the other hand, more and more advanced
recycling technology can further reduce the manufacturing cost of newspapers.
So, these are the places that the company needs to focus on in the future.

Commented [AC7]: This is not taken from the Case

the time.

Leadership

Leadership is the ability to influence how people think and feel to act decisively
and responsibly (Patterson 2014). The good leadership can make a positive
impact on the company's strategy and culture. Seven Level of Leadership

strengths and weakness and helping other to advance. Obviously, according to
management model, he is above level four.
However, he also said that it still has many managers think they should have
an over-control. In the model, this situation locates between level-1 Crisis
Manager. It means these people need to become more creative and empower
others and these can help them to work towards the next level.
Adaptive leadership behavior is called transformational leadership, which
affects the innovation capacity and innovation trend of the company
(Gumusluoglu and Llsev, 2009). Commented [AC9]: This is confused.
Just like the above strategic analysis, the company needs to innovate.
Therefore, the leadership of company leaders should also adapt to this trend of
innovation and strive to improve their leadership to a higher level. Commented [AC10]: What does this mean?

Culture Commented [AC12]: This is a better section

The development of a company is closely related to its own culture. An

organization's culture is shaped by its history, its environment, its leaders, and
the people who work for the company (CMI). Commented [AC13]: You need to define culture
The Competing Values Framework model is a method to help companies
analyze the current and future cultural trends. According to figure 3 it can know
that the culture of Newsprint is hierarchy, not Adhocracy, because in the
interview Steve said the company has worked with a command and control
environment and lack innovation culture. According to the analysis of the future Commented [AC14]: Use quotations
strategy above, in order to compete with the ever-changing electronic
technology and consolidate the existing customers, the company needs to have
innovation. So, the company culture needs to have a change from Hierarchy to
Adhocracy.
On the other hand, the managers’ leadership also has deep relationship with
the culture of company. As Steve said, a good company culture is based on
good leadership. Combined with the analysis above, only when the managers’
leaderships are full of creativity, the company culture become a creative culture.

Commented [AC15]: no need for the picture

Structure

An organizational structure is a framework of roles, responsibilities, powers,

and communications designed to accomplish an organization's tasks and
achieve its goals. The organizational structure is also known as the organization
chart/organization chart (Ottih, 2008).
Mcgregors’s Theory X and Y has two kind of structure. One is type x which is
known as “the authoritarian management style” and another is type y which
is known as “the participative management style” (Stoyanov, S., Diderich, M.
2017). This model can help company to get a clear picture of where it is and
which structure they want.

of employees to solve problems. From this, it can be seen that the company
recognizes its shortcomings and try to adapt to the y-shaped structure.
