Experiences and Anecdotes

People have a lot of experiences and anecdotes to share
when they are with friends and family. Some of them are
positive, others are negative. There are some stories that
we remember and like to share because they are funny,
or even scary. Nowadays with technology, people can
share stories right after they happen, even if they are on a
a trip. All these stories have something in common, they
cause people to have different feelings. The important
thing about both bad and good experiences, is that they
leave a message, and provide an opportunity to learn a

lesson for life.

Communication and Cultural Awareness

How many links can you find on the Internet about one specific topic? How do you know which one is reliable?

Too Much Information?

1. Read this article about the information you find on the Internet.

The internet is a useful source for looking up information. It makes life

easy because you have access to the world with a single click. But, what
happens when you don’t know what link to click on? Here are some stories
about people who were in that situation.
My name is Mike. I’m in the third year of high school and I love the internet,
but it’s also a bit dangerous. When I have to do research for homework,
I don’t like to include information only from the Internet. I honestly prefer
books and academic papers. Once I copied some incorrect information.
Now I check the sources of what I read on the internet.
I’m Julia, and I like doing all my homework using of the internet. For my
last geography homework, I looked up information about volcanoes in Latin
America. I didn’t check the website and I just printed the first link I found. My
teacher asked me about the Amazon Volcano. I said, I think it is a river, and
my teacher replied, “Why did you write it’s a volcano?” I was so embarrassed.
I’m Carla and I don’t enjoy doing homework on the internet. Last week,
I had to do a literature homework about poets, and, to be honest, I didn’t
take my time to do it well. I just copied some information from a website.

What is the Digital World?

1. Read this article about the digital world.

The internet is the starting point of a great digital revolution. One of the most
relevant changes in this era is communication. People used to make phone
calls. Now, thanks to smartphones and the internet, communication is faster
and easier. In fact, video calls are now part of everyday communication.
This digital world has also influenced education. Teachers have developed
many tools, and designed websites and virtual classes to make the learning
process more effective. For example, video conferences are perfect for
keeping in touch with students who can’t attend face-to-face classes.
Nowadays, social networks help support businesses to buy and sell
products, and even keep in touch with customers in a more personalized
way.
There are a lot of benefits in this digital world. However, there are also
some dangers if a person doesn’t use the internet safely. Everyone has to be

What are some funny anecdotes related to the use of social networks?

I Tweeted it Wrong

Sometimes you can send a message or make a call to the

experiences and anecdotes that are... interesting.
Freepik

Hi, my name is Micaela, and I work as a secretary in a big company. We

always use social networks to keep in touch with our coworkers and,
of course, the boss. We usually send messages, and we hardly ever make
calls. I prefer sending text messages rather than sending emails. One day,
I wanted to know about the exact date of an important meeting, so I sent
a message to my boss to ask him about it. I wrote something like this:
“Hi, Rick. Can you tell me when the meeting is?”. I waited two hours, but
he didn’t answer. Then, I got a message from my cousin Rick. He wrote
me: “Hi, little cousin. I’m sorry, what meeting are you talking about?”. I
realized that I sent the message to the wrong person. I laughed, and
I explained to my cousin what happened. After that, I sent the message to

What’s the traditional dish in your city? Why is it so popular?

Food and Tradition

Traditional food is part of each country’s culture and identity. The ingredients
and the methods of cooking combine perfectly to create tasty dishes. Each
dish has a story to tell and a unique flavor which represents a city, region,
or country.

1. Read the article about typical food and cultural identity.

Food is an important part of everyone’s cultural identity. Traditional

cooking is the heart of each community’s identity. When a foreigner tries
a local dish, they learn more about the area’s traditions.
For example, when a person travels to the coast and asks for ceviche. The
tourist knows it’s made with fresh seafood, which is typical and available
in that region. On the other hand, a person who visits the highland region
can enjoy dishes prepared with pork, potatoes, and corn. In the Amazon
region, there is a great variety of exotic foods, including ants with lemon.
Visitors should try local dishes to understand the community they're

visiting, and help the local economy.

In Ecuador, every geographical region and city has its own gastronomical
tradition. In the Galapagos and the coast, the traditional dishes are seafood.

Andre Zimmern is an American chef, and his most famous show is Bizarre

many parts of the world. The main objective of the show is to present exotic
foods, which Andrew eats and talks about. He goes all over the world, and
every place is a great experience. Below are comments about some of his
most remarkable trips.
In the Philippines, Zimmern tried shrimp pancakes because he loves
seafood. As a dessert, he had a delicious bun made from cheese ice cream.
In Oaxaca, Mexico, he ate insects. A typical dish in that city is grasshopper,
or chapulines. Their flavor was unique because they were served with a hot
chili pepper sauce.
In Bolivia, he drank a glass of mocochinchi. This is a typical drink that has
peach juice and cinnamon. It’s sweet and a great cocktail.
In Delhi, India, he tried some flowers and fruits. In India, they don’t eat
beef, so they prepare other types of food. For example, Zimmern tried
boiled banana flower with curry, which is a traditional vegetarian dish.

There are a lot of exotic ingredients and tastes in each part of the world.
Each dish makes a visit someplace unique and unforgettable. However,
not everyone likes to try new foods. Below are some posts from tourists
who have tried exotic foods in different cities in Asia.
“Food in Thailand is weird but delicious. In Thailand, I found a nice street
where people can try foods including insects, frogs, and more. I bought
a serving of stir-fried silkworms. In Thai, it’s Hon Mhai. I think it’s not a
bad meal.”
“I live in Beijing, China, but I’m from Quito. I’ve tried scorpions many
times when my sister prepared them as a snack. Honestly, I liked the
ones on the street more than the ones my sister prepared. I also ate fried
scorpions with my friends from college.”
“I had an amazing experience when I was in Japan. I ordered some chicken.

Are feelings and emotions synonyms? What are the differences between them?

Feelings and Emotions

1. People say feelings and emotions are shaped by culture. Does this mean
both terms can be applied to human beings? To find out the answer,
let’s read the following paragraph!

Actually, both terms share similar elements, but they are not the same
thing. Feelings are formed in the conscious mind, whereas, emotions can
be formed either consciously or subconsciously. Feelings include physical
sensations such as hunger or pain, while emotions involve emotional
experiences such as sadness and joy. In fact, it is said some people spend
years trying to understand the depths of their emotions. Regarding animals,
it is believed that most animals feel emotions because of the way they react
under some circumstances. However, there is not a definite answer since
there are scientists who believe some animals feel emotions, while others
think animals act according to their instincts and not emotions or feelings.

In what ways can emotions be influenced by culture? What are some examples?

How Does Culture Shape Emotions?

1. Read this article about culture and emotions.

How does culture shape emotions? To answer this question, the concept
of culture needs to be clear. To put it in simple terms, culture is to know
“how”. It is is how you behave, how you perceive the world, how you talk,
how you do things, how you live and even how you perceive yourself.
Therefore, culture is a complex term. From this perspective, emotions
can be shaped by culture, because people around the world come from
different backgrounds and, consequently, experience emotions differently.
For this reason, when you set foot in a foreign country, the first thing
that gets your attention is how different things are such as the language,
the food, and even the air itself! It is like you are in a different world.
According to Batja Mesquita, who has researched the role of culture in
people's emotional lives, the way emotions are formed depends on their
culture. For example, some cultures do not think about their emotions as
something that lives inside of an individual, but as something between
people. For example, if I am happy, the other person is happy, too. Don’t
you think that’s an interesting perspective?

In my view, love is mostly related to a romantic feeling. However, this
romantic feeling is not about how much you feel for a person, but how
much you know about that person. From my point of view, that is the
definition of romantic true love. For example, just because you find
someone physically attractive, doesn’t mean you are going to feel love
for that person, because that would be too idealistic. It is just not enough,
right? Feeling romantic true love definitely takes more than that.

What role should values have in formal education?

The Importance of Values

Education without moral values is not education. To begin with, education

is a term that comes from the Latin word “educare”, which literally means “to
bring up.” Therefore, it gives us the idea that education brings out the best in
us, it helps to show our best qualities. Consequently, one can’t show their best
qualities if values are not taken into account. So, why are values so important?

1. Read this article about values and inventions.

In 1945, the atomic bomb was created by scientists, who, in theory,

received formal education. The question is: were they really educated?
This question arises because of the fact that their invention killed more
than 200,000 people. If those scientists had shown some moral values,
they would have used their knowledge for the greater-good and not for
killing people. Surprised? Well, you shouldn't be, because this is just one

example among many. Therefore, if you have the opportunity to study,

don't forget about values, because if you do, no matter how many degrees
you get in your life, they will be useless if your purpose is to make yourself
feel happy at the expense of making others miserable. For all these reasons,
moral values must play an important role in education.

Being grateful has positive effects on one’s health. It improves people’s

Values-Based Education

1. Read this article about VBE.

What does VBE stand for? It stands for values-based education. When
it comes to values in Education, only positive values should be included,
in order to make positive changes in education. It is assumed that ethical
thinking comes from families, but this can no longer be 100% true, because
families are not the same as centuries ago. Therefore, schools must also be
a foundation to build an ethically-based society. This does not mean that
families have nothing to do with teaching values. Instead, both schools
and families must play an important role in teaching values to children
