IV. CONTENT

Motivation

Note: For this motivation portion, write your answer in the box under Reflection on page 6.
1. Do you think modern technology has given us enough that family members who live in
different countries can still maintain close family ties? Why or why not?
2. Have you ever applied computer programs and application in doing school-related tasks
like studying literature? What computer programs and application have you used? Does
using this ICT tools make your learning more meaningful and exciting? Why do you
say so?

Interaction

Literature is evolving with the times. One way to embrace these changes is through
multimedia presentations. Why is multimedia encouraged in literary interpretation? This is
because some of you may think differently from one another and may possess other
intelligences such as creative, musical, spatial, and mathematical intelligences.

The main goal of creating multimedia presentation is to elicit a response from your
audience. Using multimedia in class has been known to help students demonstrate their
limitless creativity and invaluable insights, which is how literary text must be interpreted in
learning.

Here are some of the multimedia formats that you can use to creatively interpret various
genres of literary texts.

▪ Blog or “weblog” is a website containing informational articles about a person’s

own opinions, interests and experiences. These are usually changed regularly.
▪ Mind mapping is a graphical technique to visualize connections of idea and pieces
of information. This tool structures information to better analyze, comprehend,
synthesize, recall, and generate new ideas. You can use Microsoft Word or online
mind mapping tools in creating a mind map.
▪ Mobile phone text tula is a traditional Filipino poem. A particular example of this
poem is a tanaga that consists of four lines with seven syllables each with the same
rhyme at the end of each line.
▪ Slideshow presentation is created with the use of Microsoft PowerPoint. It
contains series of pictures or pages of information (slides) arranged in sequence and
often displayed on a large screen using a video projector.
▪ Tag cloud is a visual, stylize arrangement of words or tags within a textual content
such as website, articles, speeches, and databases.
▪ Video is an electronic device used to record, copy, playback, broadcast, and display
moving visual media.

Have you read an anecdote? Have you ever retold a personal experience to someone?
How do you find recalling past experiences?

We are fond of sharing humorous experiences in life to our family members and friends.
We might not be aware that we are already sharing stories like anecdotes all day, every day.

An anecdote is a short, entertaining or interesting story about a real incident or person.

Anecdotes tell about a variety of stories and tales, since they can be about any topic
under the sun. It is a short story about a real person or event which usually intends to make the
listeners laugh or ponder over a topic.

3
Let us explore some of the purposes of anecdotes:
• To bring cheer
Stories pop up anywhere and these are just sometimes making people laugh to
brighten their mood. Here is an example of an anecdote meant to look back on
happy memories:
o At the dinner, a Grade 11 learner shared his story on his first day of school when he
got lost and attended a wrong class.
• To reminisce
In most anecdotes, people are talking about their experiences in the past. They try
to look back on moments in their lives and share the joy of that time with others.
Here is an example of an anecdote with a hint of reminiscence:
o A mother tells her children a story about her life in the province when she was a
teenager.
• To caution
Sometimes, just giving rules for an individual is not effective. Sharing to them
frightening stories of dangers can be helpful for them to realize the possible
consequences of their action. Here is an example of cautionary anecdote:
o Before beginning a lecture on not following traffic rules, a father tells his son an
incident of collision that caused many lives due to ignoring traffic signs.
• To persuade or inspire
Sometimes, people share stories on how they surpass their struggles in life. These,
most of the time, give encouragement to others who have been in similar situations.
The message usually conveys successes in life as a fruit of hard work. Here is an
example of inspirational anecdote:
o Before beginning a remedial class, the teacher tells the students how a boy who used
to struggle in reading managed to be a proficient reader.

Interdisciplinary Focus

One of the topics in Araling Panlipunan talks about migration. According to

the Blas F. Ople Policy Center and Training Institute, “There is no let-up in the
number of Filipino women leaving work abroad as domestic workers. Based on the
records of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, the deployments of
Filipino domestic workers abroad is increasing year-to-year. For the first time,
newly hired household service workers (HSWs) breached the 100,000-mark
(136,000 deployed in 2011). Around 70% of these HSWs went to the Middle East
where conditions are harsh especially for non-skilled women workers.”

Valuing

The story “Waiting” by Ron Darvin is a wholesome depiction of the real-life

struggles of Filipino immigrants in Canada, who are bound to a lot of changes:
adapting to the lifestyle and culture abroad, and learning how to live far away from
loved ones. It also emphasizes the sacrifices that these families bear and how this
sacrifice leads them to long for each other and get tired of waiting. But for you, dear
student, infuse your life with action. Do not wait for it to happen. Make it happen.
Make your own future. Make your own hope. Whatever your beliefs, honor your
Creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by
doing what you can to make grace happen to yourself, right now, right down here
on Earth. What do you think is worth waiting for?

Philippine fiction, more importantly short stories of the Philippines, tells that no
matter how life changes for the Filipinos, the4tenacity to survive will always be there. Did
you know that these characters show the best and the worst of being a Filipino—from
gender issues to diaspora of being far away from home, effects of being left behind by
parents, colonial mentality, and so much more? Yet they always survive in the end. These
characters, no matter who they are, all represent a part of you as a Filipino student. This is

Generalization

One of the ways learning is progressing is through the use of multimedia, be it in the form of
videos, computers, tablets, internet, or visual/aural devices. These multimedia tools help foster creative
and critical thinking skills in the students, which in turn helps to understand the literary text better.

The use of multimedia presentation is a very versatile way of exhibiting what you learned and
how you perceived the knowledge you gained.

To bring cheer, to reminisce, to caution, to persuade or to inspire are some of the purposes of
anecdotes.
